First Surveillance Audit - QMS Dynamics and Quality System Indicators

I am prepping for my first ever surveillance audit and am feeling confident in the areas that he has told us he is going to be conducting process audits on. However, the schedule says that after the opening meeting we are going to be dicussing QMS dynamics and Quality system indicators. Is there something here specifically he is looking for? I would think that our process monitoring and managment review takes care of most of that stuff.

I just don't want to be caught unpreparred strictly because I have never been through a surveillance audit with him before.

Quality system indicators are the measurements to help you decide if your QMS is functioning as intended or not. Such indicators of performance might include:

Customer satisfaction data
Number of repeat internal audit findings
Product audit results
Others that would fall under 8.4:
The organization shall determine, collect and analyse appropriate data to demonstrate the suitability and effectiveness of the quality management system and to evaluate where continual improvement of the effectiveness of the quality management system can be made. This shall include data generated as a result of monitoring and measurement and from other relevant sources.

Hello Joconnell,

QMS dynamics may mean (positive) developments in the QMS. Things the organization has implemented to further enhance the performance of the QMS. Be prepared to show "things done well" and of course the associated evidence.

Quality system indicators are typically the key performance indicators:
  • Quality
  • Delivery
  • Customer satisfaction
  • etc.
Be prepared to show the performance measurements of your key processes as well.

Just some thoughts.

Too many people associate (Quality) Objectives with only financial targets/performance. Obviously these can be those, but in essence it can be anything and everything related to your business operations.

I also suggest being prepared for the discussion of "What happens when desired results are not achieved?" (i.e., goals are not hit on your metrics). Hopefully, you can show actions taken to get things back under control.

As long as it has some correlation with the broad aspect of quality & customer satisfaction, yes. There are many critical business objectives that don't pass the litmus test to qualify as a quality objective.

We had a prolonged discussion along those lines in the Is a Sales Growth Objective a 'Quality' Objective? thread. I know other people have different opinions on the subject. :tg:

Indeed. But the overall approach, finding meaningful, legitimate quality objectives is not usually all that controversial.
