My company recently bought a flat panel laser scanner and I have been trying to make sense out of calibrating it. The problem is that evey time I calibrate it, it is out of spec. by a few thousands. This is with a daily calibration. The vendor says to calibrate until it comes into spec. This is a new machine. I have the manufacturer comming soon to explain this to me but in the mean time I don't trust this very expensive measuring device.
Does anyone have any insight into this? Am I expecting too much from this type of inspection device. It is great at telling me if a feature is missing or a punch is installed at the wrong angle, or there is an extra feature on the part. However, the dimensional readings it gives me do not match what I get on the surface plate with standard inspection tools. I have seen .020" difference in measurements
