Fmea

Just curoius on FMEA's. We are a Tier 2 supplier we make small precision parts for an automotive company. I submitted the fmea and they were'nt happy about the effects of the failure. They want me to explain what will happen after our parts are in there finished product.

1. First I dont know what it will cause in the final product because the part that we make does'nt tell me how it works in the finished product.

2. What do I need to make them happy. Do I ask for a Dfmea so I will know what effects it will have on their finished product if our part is out of spec.:(

Um, um, we can't share that with you...)

I have always aked for a DFMEA in order to address all of their concerns. I'll bet you $100 bucks right now when you ask for it, it will either be a) Proprietary Informormation (i.e. they don't have one), or b) so vague it wont help you. Nonetheless, I would put the ball in their court and professionally convey that they need to be part of the process in order for you to make this an effective exercise and ensure optimum quality. You can't address what you don't know. Knock 'em dead and have a day.

Dan,

As part of your FMEA development, get your customer involved. Ask them to attend your meetings or see if someone in your organization (Product Engineer) can be the 'Voice of the Customer' at these get togethers.

Or, you might want to go and see the part in use (if it is a current production part).

Sorry, but that just blows me away!!!!! Ain't it grand being in the automotive field?

Been there with noboxwine's comments (although it's usually that they don't have one!!) and IceZebra is right, even if it means a phone conversation with your customer and going through the Modes one by one. Without your customer's input you don't really know if you need to address their automotive customer or the ultimate customer (or any other customers in between). For example, your customer may have a "No Build" situation which, IMO, is a lot less severe than them forwarding an issue on to the OEM or consumer.

Final thought: Did your customer say anything about the Severity Rating you applied or just the verbage in the Effects column (although if you haven't truly ascertained the effects it would be rather hard to apply an appropriate Severity rating)?

ABSOLUTELY ! THE MOST EFFECTIVE AUTOMOTIVE PLATFORM I HAVE EVER BEEN A PART OF WAS A RESULT OF OUR CUSTOMER BEING DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THE FMEA PROCESS FROM THE BEGINNING AND SEVERAL TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DEVELOPMENT STAGES. INCREDIBLE! THREE YEARS AND WELL OVER 2 MILLION PARTS LATER, IT WAS EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY OUR dPPM WAS 4 AND WE BECAME THE SOLE SUPPLIER.
