Then, management is unclear the requirement like me who is not in the automotive area......:D

it is very sad to hear that.....However, we should correct them from continual wrong in this case....

Re: FMEA vs Kepner Tregoe Struggle

I agree and made that argument. They have used lean terminolgy in describing it as waste (none value added) since they are already doing PPA (potential problem analysis. I really don't know what other reason to give.:(
If they are "already doing PPA (potential problem analysis)," and it is well-done, then it should be simply a matter to document it in a FMEA format.

However, I would sooner suspect they have not done an adequate "potential problem analysis" and that is the whole point of why the Big 3 mandate a FMEA approach. It truly is a useful tool, if done well.

Frankly, (and I'd really appreciate someone straightening me out on this), but I don't see the correlation between using the KT steps and performing an FMEA! Making a decision etc. seems to me to be quite different to evaluating failure modes and the action required to mitigate them.

But then it doesn't matter, because you gotta do an FMEA. Use the KT for your corrective action process (which is were I know it from)

My experience with Kepner Tregoe is a little dated (1980's), so it may have changed a lot. What I remember from the "NEW RATIONAL MANAGER" book was the IS/IS-NOT/DIFFERENCES/CHANGES analysis that Ford incorporated into the Global 8D problem solving methodology. I know that they had some decision making tools to go along with that.

Based on this, I agree with AndyN, that problem solving is different than the potential risk mitigation of an FMEA.

However, it has been 20-some years, and Kepner-Tregoe may have updated their offering although they always seemed more focused on management tools than engineering tools.

All good points given here. I am also a little dated with my KT training. I look at it like this.
:DUse FMEA for part/process/project related risk analysis on automotive programs.
:DUse KT for the Big Picture organizational culture continual improvement/problem solving/risk analysis.
Used like this, maybe we can all co-exist.
By the way, when I teach core tools and TS 16949 classes, I have often referred to my KT training as enhancing my knowledge and approach to situations.

Excellent advice. :agree1: I have a feeling that maybe the OP's managers are thinking that they just spent all of this money on KT and now they're going to have to put it in the closet and do something else, but as you say, it's not an either/or question.

Re: FMEA vs Kepner Tregoe Struggle

Do they understand what "requirement" means? There might be a few customers here and there who will listen to reason in the automotive world, but believe me, there aren't many. "Negotiations" in automotive work usually go something like this:

Automotive Customer: Here are the requirements. Follow them to the letter.

Supplier: But it makes no sense for my company. What if I do x instead?

Automotive Customer: We aren't allowed to make decisions that favor suppliers, ever. Here are the requirements. Follow them to the letter.
I fully agree with these statements. Maybe it is an idea to add the C to FMEA: criticality of issues is included in the FMECA. This approach adds value, since it provides opportunities to separate the critical from the less critical.
