I was going by total points. The big two and little nine (Big 10) is behind the SEC.
And the total points include a big honkin' advantage for "Big 4" bowl points. Here's the records:
Big 4 Bowls: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl
Rose Bowl:
92 games
Big 10
59 Appearances, 29 wins, 30 losses
SEC
8 Appearances, 4 wins, 4 losses
Sugar Bowl
72 Games
Big 10
9 appearances, 2 wins, 7 losses
SEC
65 appearances, 31 wins, 33 losses, 1 tie
Orange Bowl
72 Games
Big 10
9 appearances, 6 wins, 3 losses
SEC
29 appearances, 14 wins, 15 losses
Fiesta Bowl
35 Games
Big 10
12 appearances, 11 wins, 1 loss
SEC
6 appearances, 2 wins, 4 losses
Overall
Big 10
89 appearances, 48 wins, 41 losses
SEC
108 appearances, 51 wins, 56 losses, 1 tie
Sure, you can assign "bowl points" for just showing up at bowl games that traditionally pit an SEC champion against some pre-selected pansy (Sugar Bowl). You see what happens when they have to go play the Big 8 Champion (Orange Bowl) or a game pitting allegedly matched opponents (Fiesta Bowl). The won-loss record speaks for itself. When the Big 10 Champion plays a real opponent in a bowl game (the PAC 10 Champion, Rose Bowl 1947-2001) it's even money. When the SEC champion plays a hand-picked opponent (Sugar Bowl 1950-1997) it is also even money.
