Football! (OK, we will even let soccer come in) - Fall 2006

Re: Football! (OK, we will even let soccer come in)

Last time I checked (which was Sunday when my team was knocked out of the Hampshire cup on penalties), a football match lasted 90 mins.
Why can't football (soccer) learn to use a stopwatch? I not an expert, but last time I checked, matches last about 92-96 minutes, but no one really knows until it is over. ;-)

Icy’s BCS Top 5 (Sort-of) Breakdown
Louisville (Go Cards!) is really tough this year and will secure a firm hold on the #3 spot when they win over Rutgers.
OUCH!! I'm eating crow already! Does Rutgers have enough schedule power to end up in the #3 spot? It's a distinct possibility! With a win at WV in their last game and Harris/Coaches Poll rankings anywhere above #7, that is a YES!

Re: Football! (OK, we will even let soccer come in)

Hopefully Louisville will NOT drop from top 10, but that Rutgers will move into the top 10.....

After all, Louisville was beaten by a ranked opponent.....USC was beaten by an UNRANKED oppoenent and stayed in the top 10.....

Will the BCS show one more example of bias, or actually get it right?

Still, if the Gators beat the Gamecocks this weekend.....they should, but it IS the SEC, which means anything can happen.....then the Gators should be back at #3.....and able to take on the winner of the Big 10 for the BCS.....

And remember, USC still has to get past Oregon (SC should win), Cal (SC should lose), and Notre Dame (SC should lose big).....SC is this season learning how to play 4 quarter football.....three times of BARELY winning against unranked opponents, and a loss.....they do not deserve to be in the top 5.....I support Cal in the top 5, but USC is way over-rated.....just my opinion of course.....

Arsenal is playing against Liverpool this coming Sunday 12 Nov 06. We shall see who's gonna be beaten...

Team GP Pts
Man U 11 28
Chelsea 11 25
Bolton 11 20
Portsmouth 11 19
Arsenal 10 18
Aston Villa 11 18
Everton 11 17
Liverpool 11 17

:D
We will see. We are pretty poor this season, but I don't think Arsenal have been any better. 1 point difference.....oh you are only 10 points behind Man U instead of 11!

One for Tim F, it's definitely 90mins, but there is a thing called stoppage time which is added on at the end of each half to compensate for the time taken over injuries etc.........kind of like a +/- tolerance, the capability of a game is dependant upon the teams involved (I.e. how much they time waste, spend pretending to be injured etc...) and the referee involved. Like any production process, variation is inevitable and so it must be monitored and compensated for.

Of course if the game needs to have a winner on the day. 30 mins of extra time is played (15 mins each way) and if still not decided, then penalties is used!

I actually roughly understood this idea. My point is that every other timed sport actually stops the clock when play is stopped for injury, penalties, etc. That way everyone knows how much time is left, rather than simply wondering when the ref is going to call the game.

Why hasn't soccer yet adopted the 17th? centrury technology of a clock that can be stopped and started? :bonk: ;)

Hershel you and Icy are leaving out a very important scenerio. Arkansas beating Florida in the SEC championship game and being 13-1 for the season. Knowing the BCS we would still be lucky to make it to the Cotton Bowl. Don't count us out so far its been a fabulous season not counting the loss to USC. We will be able to tell more after Saturday's game. If (When) Arkansas beats Ten. then we shouldn't have any problem the rest of the year. This thread will be busy come Monday.

Have a Good Weekend

Re: Football! (OK, we will even let soccer come in)

Sorry Dale,
In all my perusals of the Top 25 and their opponents for the rest of the season, I did miss the Arkansas Proposition (sounds like a Ludlum book). Add that Hog win over Auburn to Razorback wins over Tennessee, LSU and finally the curs-ed Gators in the SEC championship and I think that Arkansas would be a soooie-in to play the winner of the OSU-UM game for the national championship.

I think USC, Texas and Florida all have another loss coming. Cal, ND and WVU aren't out of the woods, either. Arkansas #2 and Rutgers #4 if they both win out?

I just wonder how far the loser of the OSU-UM game drops? I mean, someone's got to lose. If you're #2 and lose to #1, doesn't that still mean you're #2, assuming everyone else has a 1 loss record as well? I'd really hate to see the loser go any lower than #3.

If soccer is admissible, then why not the great Irish game of Hurling, wherein two teams try to break sticks over each other's heads:

I'm also told that the same name is given to a different, but very popular, activity that takes place outside Irish pubs at closing time.

An activity by this name is also very popular with college students at Big 10 universities, especially around 1AM Sunday morning after a football Saturday. This might occur at schools in other leagues but I have to limit my reporting to personally observed facts, since Jim is watching (wink, wink). Go Bucks! Go Boilers!:beerdive:

Re: Football! (OK, we will even let soccer come in)

I didn't miss the Arkansas connection, just didn't mention it.....

Arkansas still has to get past LSU, which is by far the toughest game remaining for them, until they get to Atlanta.....I am assuming of course they beat LSU.....as for Tennessee, that is SEC East, and should not affect the position of Arkansas for the SEC West title.....

The fight in Atlanta will be a true SEC match.....that is a blood feud, jackyard dog, draw-quarter-kill-then-hurt-them kind of match.....good football in other words.....

GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chomp! Chomp!
