...The justification for the creation of a Foundation FMEA (FFMEA) is to capture all the knowledge of a Design or Process in FMEA format. They will be generally owned by a Technical Specialist or Subject Matter Expert for that product or process. They are to be used as a method of retaining Product Quality History pertaining to the design or process of a system; sub-system or component. It will allow Design and Process teams to build up a database of knowledge that can be used for future FMEA creation on new or modified Product or Process. They should be regularly maintained by the TS or SME with the most recent data available. Every year at the appropriate and agreed timing a copy should be filed away within the official repository system for reference. The scope of a Foundation FMEA can be at a system, subsystem, or component level for a Design or at manufacturing or assembly level for the Process. The scope of a FFMEA should include the technology/product/ process. It should address the interactions on the system level, but could be extended up to the vehicle level as necessary.
Most of the Design Foundation FMEA will be performed like a "normal" Design FMEA. Most of the Process Foundation FMEA will be performed like a "normal" Process FMEA. Therefore, this section of the FMEA Handbook will only highlight the differences.
