Foundation FMEA: what is it?

Hello all

In new AIAG-VDA FMEA handbook in clause 1.3.6, there is some descriptions about Foundation FMEA and Family FMEA.
May someone provide some more explanation about foundation FMEA? Or provide me an example of foundation FMEA?

Thanks all

I have never heard of it before this. There is little or no information coming up in searches. From the little that I could find, it might be an FMEA the covers the areas that a family of parts share in common thus providing the foundation for add-on FMEAs that cover the areas unique to each part in the family. However, this is just an educated guess.

A Family FMEA for a family of products. Different name, but same thing, I think.

Was just checking - I found this on Google: "The foundation FMEA is not program specific, therefore the generalization of requirements, functions, and measures is allowed. Family FMEAs are specialized..."

13.9.2016: Gavin Robbins presents the implementation of Foundation FMEA at the Global SME Summit in Plzeñ, Czech Republic.

I just found this: JLR_FMEA[1] - It is a Jaguar - Landrover .pdf (JLR FMEA Handbook Version 2.0 – Copyright © 2010) on a "slideshare" type of website. It says: "Section 6 – Foundation FMEA (FFMEA)" and it starts on page 199. The entire document is 324 pages long.

...The justification for the creation of a Foundation FMEA (FFMEA) is to capture all the knowledge of a Design or Process in FMEA format. They will be generally owned by a Technical Specialist or Subject Matter Expert for that product or process. They are to be used as a method of retaining Product Quality History pertaining to the design or process of a system; sub-system or component. It will allow Design and Process teams to build up a database of knowledge that can be used for future FMEA creation on new or modified Product or Process. They should be regularly maintained by the TS or SME with the most recent data available. Every year at the appropriate and agreed timing a copy should be filed away within the official repository system for reference. The scope of a Foundation FMEA can be at a system, subsystem, or component level for a Design or at manufacturing or assembly level for the Process. The scope of a FFMEA should include the technology/product/ process. It should address the interactions on the system level, but could be extended up to the vehicle level as necessary.

Most of the Design Foundation FMEA will be performed like a "normal" Design FMEA. Most of the Process Foundation FMEA will be performed like a "normal" Process FMEA. Therefore, this section of the FMEA Handbook will only highlight the differences.
NOTE: Because these types of documents tend to "disappear" over time, I suggest that you read it now. It is copyrighted so it can not be archived here. I signed up and it can be downloaded as a .pdf file to your computer, so do it now!

Hi Marc,

Thank for your reference to JLR FMEA Handbook.
In Glossary section at JLR FMEA Handbook there is an item as follows:

Corporate Product System Codes II (CPSC II):
A six-digit number that divides the vehicle into systems, subsystems, and features. This information is placed in the header of a DFMEA or a CFMEA Design.

Can someone provide me any reference (manual, procedure, website, etc) about Corporate Product System Codes II (CPSC II)?

Thanks all

This JLR FMEA handbook is very similar to Ford's. They used to be owned by Ford, and most of their systems came from Ford. CPSC is a Ford system of product codes, and the Ford FMEA Handbook has the same item as above (but without the "II"). Placing the CPSC code in the FMEA header is a customer-specific requirement of sorts and can be ignored if you're not doing an FMEA for JLR.

Hi kbg 1000,

Is there any reference document to explain CPSC coding system?
