Fourier Analysis for NVH - Reference info to understand the Fourier Analysis method

Hello, looking for reference information to understand the Fourier analisys method to measure surface finish to evaluate potential Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) risks. Need to go back and set up a grinder machine but we are not sure what parameter(s) we should change based on the measurement result.

I've never heard of anyone applying this specific label to troubleshooting surface finish issues but you can call it whatever you like. I’m also not sure how to evaluate “potential Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) risks” on a grinding machine set up. Vibration would be a key item but any vibration in the machine should stand out like a sore thumb.

The parameters involved are:
Workpiece material
Workpiece hardness
Workpiece Weight
Workpiece diameter (or length)
Workpiece stock amount on final passes
Workpiece Location and rigidity
Workpiece RPM and/or Traverse Speed
Wheel type
Wheel hardness
Wheel grit
Wheel Ø
Wheel Speed
Wheel Surface Feet/Minute
Dressing Diamond Type and general condition
Traverse Speed of Dressing
Coolant application
Coolant Type
Coolant Viscosity
Coolant Cleanliness

When grinding, there are so many different combinations of factors that come in to play. The biggest contributing factors are those in bold.

Can you be more specific with your problem?

Follow the link under "Investigative techniques" for some discussion of Fourier transforms. AFA I understand it is based on analysing a time series, but I guess that in the context of surface finish you could do the same if you replace time with location along a measured surface. just a wild guess :notme:

I apologize if I was not clear on my inquiry for information.

This is in fact a blue print call out, this is how is stated:

SHORT WAVINESS INTERPRETED USING FOURIER-ANALYSIS.
EVALUATION 5. TO 300. ORDER
n0 = 0.7
K = 0.6
R = 3

We are dealing with out of spec parts, our shafts have up to 4 journals and the out of spec condition jumps from one to another as we play with RPMs, feeds, dwells and other parameters.
