From certified QMS to certified integrated MS

We've made the transition to the latest version of ISO 9001, better late than never right? During the audit I was talking to the auditor about integrated standards. It seems to me that since all the management standards are migrating or have migrated to a common format standard they should begin to make integrated standards easier to transition to and get certified for.

So in my ignorance I'm assuming the "know thyself" parts of all management standards will be basically similar. So if certified for quality you just need to integrate the H&S or environmental processes your company already carries out. That is three standards in one MS isn't as arduous as setting up three separate management systems. Processes like internal audit and management review could be combined for all the integrated systems surely?

How close to the mark am I? What's really involved? Is the external auditor just drumming up business?

Integrated Management System is no joke. Though combining it resulting to a more efficient and reducing redundant documentations.
As the standards migrate to a common format a holistic approach for the procedures, policies and processes. The usual first step is Awareness on the requirements of IMS and training the personnel(s) involved. A gap analysis to identify what needs to be done. Documentation. Implementation. Internal Audit to check and verify the effectiveness.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Raffy

Your organization is one system.

Making sure that system satisfies the requirements of customers/potential customers and all of the system standards that are important to them (for their assurance of quality) makes basic business sense.

Avoid developing separate subsystems around each standard (that then have to be “integrated”) so focus on understanding and developing the business management system instead.

Yes, the auditor is attempting to drum up more business. Nevertheless, many organizations are expected to demonstrate reliable means of conformance with multiple management system standards, such as, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, etc....

So, in order to have a system which can demonstrate conformance to multiple standards, there is one VERY IMPORTANT requirement that is contained in the ISO High Level Structure and common text and, therefore, in most of the recent ISO Management System Standards.

The requirement, under the 5.1 Leadership and commitment section reads:
ensuring the integration of the XXX management system requirements into the organization’s business processes;
So, if you really want to have a sustainable, multi-disciplinary, integrated management system, all of these disciplines (quality, environment, occupational health & safety, etc.) need to be EMBEDDED in the business/operational processes of the organization. That is the ONLY smart, cost-effective, enduring and sustainable way.

You are right on the mark. If your QMS is effective you are well on your way to having an integrated management system and should be able to add certifications way easier than going at each separately.
