Fully nested ANOVA: A missing p-values (Minitab)

Hello,

I am trying to interprete the example of fully nested ANOVA that comes with Minitab 16. My doubt is as follows: why is there no p-value for the batch variable?

I would have to see and review your *.MPJ file to be certain. One possibility that I can think of is that if the experiment is unreplicated, there is no error term with which to perform the test of significance.

Hello supreecha, many thanks for your answer. I have checked your word file but I don't know how to link this with the lack of p-value for batch.

Sorry for the delay. I did review your attachment, and saw that this was the Minitab-supplied example for the Fully Nested ANOVA. I assume that you are simply trying to understand the example, specifically why there is not a p-value for batches.

For a full explanation, you should read up on nested designs in a text such as Montgomery's Design and Analysis of Experiments. However, the simple explanation is that there were no replicate observations for batches. This left no error term with which to test the batches term for significance. The variability in the batches term was used to test the next higher level for significance, so you do get a p-value for that term.

On further review, I would not have analyzed this example the way Minitab did. I would have omitted Batches from the specified model. This would have made it clear that batches were being used as the error term. The results would have been identical except that the Batches line would have been labeled as error. If I had multiple measurements for each batch I would then have added Batch to the analysis.
