Gage Calibration - Corporate Scheme

We have 3 manufacturing sites and one corporate location. One of the 3 manufacturing sites calibrated gages and has proper procedures to do so. As a cost savings we would like to have the other manufacturing sites get their gages calibrated at the third site. Would we need to get the third site certified as an external lab or could they just do this under their current TS16949 certificate if the scope includes calibration of gages from other manufacturing sites?

The third manufacturing site does not need any certification. They can provide the calibration service to the other two sites under the ISO TS certification. No need for the scope including calibration of gages. It is not part of the "automotive" business.

This is not my specialty, but wouldn't you want to control them as though they were a supplier of services?

I (potentially) disagree with qusys.

If the site which is going to perform the calibration is run as a separate business (are all 4 locations under the same certificate of registration?) then it should be considered as a 3rd party source for calibration.

Your best bet is to contact your registrar, and ask for their interpretation of the standard. It is them that you will have to satisfy during the next audit.
