Re: Gage pin calibration procedure

Oh i am definitly pondering... How would I calibrate this micrometer for flatness / parrallelism... I am assuming that a laser mic would not need this extra step? Do they make a laser mic that does not need calibrations...

Is anyone familliar with the Pratt and Whitney line and could you give me an idea of what i can expect for cost of these products?

One way the parallelism and flatness is checked with an optical flat. Some folks have them, and have no idea how to use them. They do not even have a monochromatic light to go with them! Some folks use gage balls to see if there is any dips on in the anvils. That should be a minimum check for any micrometer calibration. Gage blocks have no chance of picking up uneven wear...but your parts do!

Yes, laser mics do not have these issues because of non-contact. Do they need calibration? Well, sure - how else can you answer the question "How do you know the mic is still reading right?"

Laser mics are great for regular measuring, too, thanks to the non-contact. I worked at a place that had hundreds of gage pins. They had a notion to get mixed up from time to time. Whip it into the laser mic, and you knew what you had, right now. Its quickness is a big benefit. It also has software capability of detecting TIR, etc...which supermic cannot "display". Handy.

Is anyone familiar with the Pratt and Whitney line and could you give me an idea of what i can expect for cost of these products?
Every place I have worked that had lasers and supermics had them prior to me getting there. But a quote should be easy enough to get...and a demo!

Re: Gage pin calibration procedure

Indeed, when I used gage pins they were commercially bought and it was decided the only reliable, cost effective approach would be to replace them when their identification writing had rubbed off from the wear in use.
I have heard this approach from many companies. It is a great idea if your only purpose of calirbation is to have confidence in the item going forward.

Don't forget the other purpose of calibration which is to have confidence that the gage was good for the times you used it in the past.

Hi guys,

I think that the best solution for pin gage set is outsourcing, but my problem is that I´m in Colombia where there isn´t any calibration lab that can do this calibration. Besides, the process tolerance is 0,05 mm, so Can I use a bench micrometer wich its resolution is 0,001 mm??

Thanks!

Be caareful with regards to the diferences between Resoloution and Accuracy (and Repeatability and Uncertainty...etc.) just because the device shows a resouloution does not meen that it is accurate to that resoloution... I have a CMM that can report 8 metric decimals but i promise that it is not that accurate...

I believe that if you are calibrating your gage pints to +/- 0.05 you would need a gage that is calibrated at +/-0.005 minimum... however make certain to note that your gage pins now can only be used to check dimensions at +/-0.05 regardless of what they where originaly made to and what they actualy measure...

I at first calibrated mine with a lazer micrometer, we changed it to a Pratt and Whitney super micrometer.
I calibrate floor used pins when they are returned to me, then i put them away in the storage drawer so they are calibrated prior to use. Inspection pins are done in sets every 6 months.
I spin the pin from top to bottom of pin between anvils of super micrometer that is set to a Carbide grade 2 gage block.:bigwave:
