Gage R&R analysis - Do I have to consider the sample specifications?

If I do an R&R analysis do I have to consider the sample specificatios? Isn't the analysis independent from them? I'm doing 3 trials of 10 samples by three operators using a caliper. The result is way above 30% R&R. A guy told tme that I should consider the tolerance range of the product I'm testing but since I haven't done an R&R in a while I don't know if that's right or wrong.

Any guidance on this is appreciated

The % R&R is based upon the equation 100*(R&R/Tolerance) where tolerance is the total tolerance band available.

I don’t know how you’re getting a % R&R value without including a tolerance band. I’ve attached an excel spreadsheet for R&R, try entering your data into here and see what you get.

Arios, Welcome to the Cove.

The analysis is not independent of specifications. The basic acceptance criteria (per MSA manual) are based on observed study variation. You should also compare GRR with specification width (Tolerance) AND process variation for better understanding of what your measurement system is doing and what it can be used for.

We discussed it here:

Also, if you just go through the threads and posts in MSA forums, you'll find more related discussions and answers to many of your questions.

Hope this helps...

Where do You have in Figure 24. and 25. of MSA 3rd Edition (Page 113-114) evidence, that dimension tolerance is used in any calculation?

If You take only OK parts for MSA how can You make atribut data analysis?

As I understand purpose of MSA, it is a tool only for measurement system verification and not process capability, that's why You can use also NG parts.

I make just now trial with very simple measurement results:

1,15 0,55 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50
1,20 0,60 1,20 0,60 1,20 0,60 1,20 0,60 1,20 0,60
1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,15 0,50 1,10 0,50

1,10 0,60 1,00 0,60 1,00 0,60 1,00 0,60 1,00 0,60
1,10 0,60 1,10 0,60 1,10 0,60 1,10 0,60 1,10 0,60
1,10 0,50 1,10 0,55 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50

1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50
1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50 1,20 0,50
1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50 1,10 0,50

and I decide that dimension tolerance is 1,10 +/- 0,2.
I receive %GRR = 23,6%

What's wrong in MSA with NG parts?
