Gage R&R Frequency - How often to perform the GR&R?

Hi All:
In recent audit, the auditor ask us to show the MSA plan which means how often we will check the GR&R status. He required us to check the GR&R regularly, in yearly basis or something like that. I was looking for this requirement in MSA AIAG manual, frankly speaking, I did not find out where to define this requirement in the book. so can anyone help to point out where defines this requirement in MSA AIAG manual? or what's the rule of the MSA regularly check?

Thank you.

Measurement System Analysis is not the same as calibration, so you do not necessarily repeat it on the same frequency.

When establishing a frequency, look for opportunities that might affect the variability of the measurement device (not the bias as in calibration). Some items that might affect variability might be:
  • A change in the experience level of the operators
  • A change in the measurement method (e.g., change in measuring shaft diameter from a random diameter to a average of the max/min, or to the max diameter, etc.)
  • New fixturing (for CMMs, automated test equipment, etc.)
  • New model of gage
  • Change in measurement environment
  • Refer to the fishbone chart in the AIAG MSA manual for many other possibilities
You may be able to get away with a statement that you will review the measurement process on an annual basis for changes that might impact the MSA results and will repeat the MSA as required by this review. You will probably have to document the criteria that you will use to trigger a repeat of the MSA.

Theoretically, there is no time function to Gage R&R. If performed correctly, it should not have to be "renewed". Gage R&R answers the question "Is this the correct gage for the job." Calibration answers the question "Does this gage still measure correctly" and does have a time function (wear, etc.)

I would never state that I would perform gage R&R to a time function, but I would encourage performing gage R&R's at the point in time that the gage system changed, as in the list above. Automotive will sneak in annual gage R&Rs by asking for annual PPAPs. The reason why they do this (the trusting souls that they are) is because they feel you may have made changes on the above list and did not analyze them at the time - or did not realize you made a change when you did. I understand why they do it, but, that is not the gage R&R function. It is more of a change control issue. Can't blame it on the tool.

Not exactly; it's "Is this the correct measurement system for the job?" because of the operator variable.

If you've documented your criteria for repeating GR&R, it's been my experience that the original gage studies can be used for annual PPAP submissions, but you never know, given the capricious nature of automotive PPAP reviewers.

If the proper choice of the variation of potential operators is captured (inexperienced to experienced), it should have been accommodated. It is designed to capture the measurement "system": the part, the gage, the operator. That is why I agreed with the operator level on the list. If the parts used to be only measure with the device in the QC lab, and now you want to use it on the line, you should redo the gage R&R and - as Dr. Phil says - see how that is working for you. (I would have still used a shop operator for a GR&R in the lab, unless it was a CMM-like device, just to capture the range and understand the influence of the operator)

If you've documented your criteria for repeating GR&R, it's been my experience that the original gage studies can be used for annual PPAP submissions, but you never know, given the capricious nature of automotive PPAP reviewers.
So painfully true.
