Hi everybody
Can someone tell me when to use those different ways to calculate GR&R?
Results can vary a lot between all those methods.

The ANOVA and Xbar/R methods will provide similar results. The Xbar/R method is easier to calculate by hand, but if you have a computer available, the ANOVA method will provide more accurate results, including the effect of the Operator x Part interaction.

However, both methods will lead to the same decision, unless your gage is very borderline. For example, one may give you a %GRR of 30.1% while the other gives 29.9%. The results are similar, but when the cutoff point is 30% max, they will lead to different decisions.

Is there anyway a more appropriate method acoording to the type of measurement performed or gage used?
I mean such as an automated gage Versus a manual one and so on..?

The two methods used by AIAG were based on the assumption that the gage is a manual gage and is subject to Reproducibility variation.

In the case of automated test equipment, there are three scenarios.

The first is that you have multiple test stations in a single ATE machine. Treat each station as an operator and the reproducibility will be the error caused by differences in stations. The repeatability will be the within station error.

The second scenario is multiple ATE machines with a single station. Treat each ATE as an operator and the reproducibility will be the error caused by differences in ATE machines. The repeatability will be the within ATE error.

The last scenario is a single ATE with one station. Perform the MSA as if you are using a single operator. I would recommend performing additional repeat measurements to compensate for the loss in reproduced measurements.

Having said all that, the same comments regarding ANOVA versus Xbar/Range methods still apply, and they are still the appropriate tools to use.
