Gage R&R Study (Crossed) - How to determine Process Tolerance

Hi,

I am doing a GR&R (Crossed) in Minitab 16. I am measuring lengths of widgets that can be anywhere from 5 cm to 120 cm. We are measuring to the closest mm. (for example: 8.5cm, 98.0cm, 60.1cm)

I am trying to figure out what to enter for "Upper spec - Lower spec". Does that mean the Upper spec - Lower spec for one widget, or for all measure widgets?

If it is for one, the tolerance is something like +/-1.3 cm (2.6), if it is for all.. then would it be 120-5 = 115?

I ask because I want to see the %Tolerance for GR&R and these numbers output very different results.

Well you cannot develop a tolerance from a Gage R and R. You would need to do a capability study. You do no have to use the %tolerance for the GRR. Any tolerance would be for the individual part and would apply to all parts.

The tolerance is that for one widget, which I am presuming is one SKU (or part number). I would run one R&R study for the shortest widget and one more for the longest widget rather than for all of them.

Could you explain why I wouldn't put "115" in the Minitab Tolerance box? Shouldn't I use the print spec?

You should use 2.6 because when you run a specific part number, you must inspect that part number to its own tolerance (i.e., 2.6) not to the total possible range of all the part numbers.
