I am the Quality & Process Manager for a new (>1yr old) steel manufacuring/welding/assembly company in the Solar Industry. We are acquiring a new Customer with requirements of a coating weight test compliant to the ASTM A90 specification, and I am having a difficult time trying to allocate an equipment list to validate this requirement. Does anyone have any direction that can help guide me as of where to look?

If this is the weight loss test that is used to check thicknesses of galvanized coating, all you need aside from the appropriate safety gear are some beakers, hydrochloric acid, a stopwatch and a precision scale.

The test involves weighing the coated sample, stripping the coating using the hydrochloric acid solution, and weighing the sample afterward. The mass loss is then used to calculate a thickness.

ETA - I double checked and see that there is something in the standard about the requirements of the scale. Mass is to be determined to the nearest 0.01 g unless the sample itself has a mass greater than 125 g, in which case the mass can be determined to the nearest 0.1 g. Other than that the only further requirements are that reagent grade chemicals are to be used.
