Hi Al & Jim,

:thanx:

I had gone thru the How stuff work stuffs.
I am just going thru the Wikipedia stuff.
I was just trying to collect the data like-----
how a gas turbine works,what are the materials used for different parts of the gas turbine, what are the basic properties of those materials......

There is probably a reason that you're asking, no? I mean, outside of idle curiousity? Do you realize how many different parts and materials a turbine engine has? And that each of those potentially thousands of parts has its own distinct "basic properties"? You've posted in a forum dedicated to questions regarding AS9100 and specific aerospace standards; if you have questions relative to the standards and application of them, you've come to the right place, but if you're looking for a dissertation on turbine engine materials and construction, I'm afraid it's beyond the scope of what we do here.

Reason

Jim,

let me tell you,

I was expecting a call for an interview from a aerospace industry.
But my background is purely of quality.
He was asking me whether I know something abt turbines.
Thats the reason why I was looking out for gas turbine stuff.
Is this not the right forum for me to post this question?????

:thanx:

It's the right forum for specific questions. The best answer for the person who asked you the question is that you don't know anything about turbines outside of what you've learned using general web searches. Don't think that you can quickly assimilate enough knowledge about a complex subject to be able to convince an expert that you know what you're talking about. It's a disservice to you, and disrespectful to the expert.

As a bystander to this (my background is in steam turbines, but some of the issues are the same with gas turbines) I will just say that it would have helped to know the need, the basis for the question. Because, no, you won't become an expert on gas turbines just through some Google searches. But, I would hope that we could pose of you some questions to cause you to reflect and think. For example, what is your background in metallurgy? A lot of the quality issues with turbines are metallurgy issues. A cracked turbine blade can be devastating - ask the people on that DC-10 that made a forced "landing" in Iowa a few years back. Knowing your background could help as we could help make the connection between your knowledge in quality to that of gas turbines. And yes, there are differences between gas turbines used in airplanes, and power turbines. And the Navy even uses gas turbines in some ships.
