Gauge R&R on a torque measurement

I have not seen your parts so I can only speak in generalities. Let's assume you are screwing a fastener into a threaded hole. I assume your test parts are assembled in random order, and later sorted in the spreadsheet for convenience of analysis, but what you label measurement #1 always precedes what is labeled #2. I notice a trend in your data where most of the sample parts have higher torque on 2nd install and higher yet on 3rd. Tightening the parts may be changing the micro-geometry or surfaces of the parts the first few times you install them. Since a GR&R is a study of the measurement system and not of the particular parts, for analysis you want parts that do not change from one trial to the next.

What I would try is "pre-condition" your samples with repeated installations until the torque measurements plateau and are no longer increasing. I would think 10 install/remove cycles on each fastener would be enough to see parts become more repeatable. Then run your GR&R on the 11th 12th and 13th install and check the repeatability and reproducibility.

I knew that the parts had variation because we had our Engineer stake them from low to high to try and help us pass the ANOVA study. It was to my understand (and maybe I'm wrong) that for the ANOVA study, you need to have parts across the entire range of your tolerance. What I meant by climbing is that it was climbing between trials but it seemed to climb the same between operators. Trial 1 was low across all 3 operators, trial 2 climbed a little bit across all 3, and trial 3 climbed more across all 3. My big question is....with the measurement we are trying to achieve, is a Gauge R&R the right study we should be doing? Its a shaft that's about 8 feet long with a U-Joint in the middle with a 0.4Nm tolerance. When we ran this gauge off at the gauge maker, it was at 10% and 11%. Obviously when paying a lot of money for a gauge, you want to make sure it is under or as close to 10% as possible.

@John Predmore We did this by exercising the U-joint (swinging back and forth) for about a minute each to make sure the joints were "relaxed". However we may have to try and repeat this by doing it just before we measure because we are thinking that if they sit for a little while, they may "settle" again.
