GD&T Q&A session - Interpreting FCF (Feature Control Frame)

Yup, no need to guess intent. Just find the centers of the slots and rectangular holes and report the positions. Who cares if they can rotate? They'll still be in spec.

Not true Mikey, I posted a link for a reason, here it is again.

http://www.tec-ease.com/tips/mar-08.htm

Orientation of the feature is controlled. Notice datum -B- and -C-, the GD&T controls the sides, much like a profile callout does. And yes I know a profile *could* be used for the features in question, but it would make a simple design complex and odds are inspection would misinterpete it....

From Tec-Ease: "All of these are implied dimensions which greatly simplify the drawing. The geometric tolerancing, of course, states how much each of these features may deviate from these goals since production cannot be expected to produce perfect parts."

So in this case, with the FCF for the rectangular hole, how much can the rectangle rotate and still be within spec?

Calculate the tolerance and divide it by 2. That will give one the +/- tolerance in each direction. Do not check in the centre of the feature along its length but at each end. Both ends should be within the calculated tolerances control orientation.

What about rectangular hole FCF tells one to do that?

The Designer is wrong here and a lot just don't know any better. 75% of the drawings that I have reviewed are flawed when it comes to GD&T. This is just another one.

If you don't believe it, get in touch with your Customer either directly or through management. Say something like " I am a bit confuses here and would like some advice". Then go through the diametrical tolerance zone on a feature of size that is not round with the orientation question.

Good luck!

That falls back to the block tol.

Reread the other thread from my last post, they do a good job explaining it. It is exactly what your asking.

This thread is about if the callouts on this print are correct, I think they are acceptable, and I hope I have conviced some others of my reasoning.
