Getting your foot in the door? Entry level QA

Hi All,

I am determined to have a career in QA however i have very little experience. I have just moved to a new country and would be interested in any suggestions you have on how to get an entry level QA job with pretty much zero contacts. I intend on taking a lead auditor course however there won't be any in my area until next year. I managed to secure a QA admin temporary role though I am nearly sure it will be coming to an end soon and I want to try and get another entry level job in Quality so that i can keep my resume consistent.

Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
M

Hi All,

Welcome to the Cove.

I am not sure if you are aware that in real life, we don't work alone. The better QA people are usually those with some industry background, able to understand and know what others are doing and hence able and easier to work with others.

With that in mind, don't limit yourself to just QA openings but take up any manufacturing or operations openings and let your employer know that you have an interest in QA. Actively volunteer to participate in any QA related activities and in time, you may be one.

Harry is on the money here.

Getting ANY job is tough, especially in a new country. There may be legal roadblocks as well as cultural ones. At the bottom of this post, I list some threads about job hunting which can be helpful.

Remember the most important rule of job hunting:
Show the value you bring to the employer, not the value he brings to you.

This means that begging for a job in the field you want to enter is useless unless you can show the employer the value he gets from hiring you.

The above posters have offered wise advice. I can only add my route which was straight out of university with an engineering/technical degree into a technical support job (via temporary fill in production operator jobs / shopfloor). I then proved my worth in that role which lead to a quality function being added.

Once I had been doing that for over 10 years I got known by another company who brought me in as their main "quality guy". That has lead to a learning curve as it is one thing being a bit of support to the Quality manager to effectively taking that on yourself.

I guess my point is if you want a QA role in a manufacturing or other business you need to know a bit about it first. I think you will find that almost all QA people started out in another role first and got moved across. I know welders who now run quality, engineers and shop floor operators who stepped up as well. I personally have not met anyone who went from school or university into a quality assurance job. Having said that there will be some who have.

If it was me I would look for the dream job but take something else while looking that adds to your CV (resume). Operations roles can do that. It will give you insights that will help I think.

Thank you all for your advice, I understand many people get there experience in another area first which is a bit disheartening as it would seem its pretty much luck of the draw, if the right manager is there thats willing to give you a chance, if there is even an opening etc . I was hoping to get an admin role within a quality department and go from there.

Thank you for the links.

Ps Harry I am aware how the real world works, thank you for speaking to me in such a condescending tone . I am sure you make a fantastic manager.:applause:
