I don't think it's possible to know what someone really meant, only what they said.
The question is, how do we know that the OP didn't *mean* to say "ensure"? From the present context it could be that "ensure" is the right word.

I think that it's a little beside the point to place a lot of weight on word choice where it's quite evident from a text posted in English that English is not the poster's first language. It might be pure chance.

Indeed, but then that takes from the semantic nuances of assure vs ensure to the semantic nuances of the "pet" in pet peeve, and I think this thread has gotten far enough off track that I will hop off here and see if I can't make my way back to the Cove on foot.
