GPT is it threat or opportunity for Elsmar cove

Something that DOES keep me up at night is the idiotification of technology. If AI does all our thinking and robots do all our work, will we turn into even worse clueless actors? And if it suddenly breaks down what is going to bootstrap humanity back to 1980?

I have very limited (conscious) engagement with AI/LLM, I am typically non-plussed. The majority of my interactions are from two scenarios:

1) A simple web search for (what I imagine to be) a 'common' problem with a popular software package. My frustration comes when I'm given "answers" that don't apply because the scraping that was done didn't discriminate between different versions (and sometimes decades of use) of the software.

2) The ChapGPT data dumps on information-sharing forums. Sorry, but I'm not looking for 'advice' from a LLM... I'm looking for nuance, sharp edges, and experience.

The only area of AI that I am generally satisfied with is map guidance when driving in unfamiliar areas... but mostly because I also get actual maps that rarely out-of-date. Even with this use case, it is not uncommon that the algorithm behind my routing makes objectively bad decisions. At least when I "veto" certain route suggestions the systems are generally quick to align themselves to my route choices.

AI is nice when you need to do quick text translations. And some work, like "structure my text into paragraphs" with specific additions.
It also helped me find some replacement options for simple parts like carriage wheels etc., just let me exclude some basic "googleing".
Not so useful when i needed info in some narrow areas of knowledge. I tried about 40 AI-models while searching HVL2 measurement and info for specific medical x-ray devices. Nothing useful.
I guess, I am not "AI-prompt engineer", i've already seen some people with this tag, they possibly will get greater results. And then me and other "simple engineers" will try to make those results into anything working))

The Cove is in the business of knowledge sharing. Any AI delivery platform promotes a similar function and, myself have used a specific AI tool to research on a Cove related enquiry and report back here on the specific thread, making sure I disclosed the source of the material.

The exponential growth of AI based solutions mean that, without a question, in a “short” time, people will be able to seek and reach answers for many of the issues discussed here, elsewhere in the AI ecosystem. In those platforms, users won’t have to deal with grumpy contributors, misleading marketeers, false prophets and misguided egos. Until that happens this community will serve a valuable purpose.

Based on my interaction with him, I believe Marc Smith would be looking into some form of solution to integrate AI into this forum because he was always receptive to improvement and efficiency gains. Unfortunately we are not in a position to make any significant change to the Cove framework at this time.

So, while your suggestion has merits, it cannot be effected. At least, not at this time.
a. no AI tool OR for that matter no prompt can be precise or elaborate enough to capture the context, perspective of a query; i dont expect ( even in dreams) to have an accurate answer; it can be expected to get an good framework, that too synthesized from multiple GPTs. GPT certainly adds to the learning, providing the framework which is generally elaborate ( but not always reliable or accurate ) I am only using the 'free' or 'basic' options of GPTs

b i do follow same principle to give the disclaimer and provide the hyperlink to the source; particularly when contributing to the discussion ( when not just adding to the answer or alternatives)

c. wrt elsmar; it was more of an concern that to keep elsmar relevant by adding the integration of the AI tool; and make the current generation to 1) leverage the tool 2) not miss them from visiting elsmar 3) stay relevant with adopting tech.

Some topics discussed here are more "evergreen" than others.... many topics are specifically informed by a particular era of legislation, regulatory actions and/or standard implementation dates. I accept that LLMs can get better at (leveraging/disclosing) context, but just like I can't trust online help about an Excel function is current, I'd become distrustful of "quality or regulatory solutions" offered up by a LLM. I'm not ignorant that there also exists a class of well-intended questions that are either incomplete, poorly formed, or initiating from a shaky (or invalid) set of assumptions. I wouldn't trust a LLM to tease out the actual question in such circumstances.

I learn as much from reading the nuances in the context of discussions as much as I do the content... as well as from tangents that get introduced along the way.

The real issue is since PQ Systems (and the Cove) were purchased by Advantive, we lost our support. The Cove is essentially flying on autopilot and the moderators and admins are essentially the flight attendants. There is no one to implement an AI.

This is an interesting video re AI where chatgpt struggled with a math question. Guy is a music guru, but interesting stuff nonetheless.
