Guard-banding and relaxed acceptance for dimensional gauges

I have a question regarding guard-banding and relaxed acceptance with dimensional gauge measurements (specifically B89-7-3-1_2001). I’m hoping someone can provide some input or point me in the right direction.

Is there a rule of thumb or accepted practice for determining what guard band limit should be used? I see a lot of labs using a guard band on their dimensional measurements and I’m not sure how they are coming up with it (in simpler terms, they add their measurement Uc to the tolerance limits of the UUT). For example, should the guard band be the entire uncertainty? Or should it be a fraction of the uncertainty? Does the accuracy of the UUT or the TUR its self have an effect on what the guard band should be?
