Guidelines for Education Sector (ISO/IWA 2)

ISO 21001, Educational organizations – Management systems for educational organizations – Requirements with guidance for use, is a management system standard that is partially aligned with ISO 9001:2015 for quality management systems. It provides a common management tool for educational organizations aiming to improve their processes and address the needs and expectations of those who use their services.

Wow, surprised when I got the notification, but happy to see this forum still exists. I remember the time before Linkedin groups and Facebook groups, where Fora ruled and this one was THE Forum for Quality Management issues. I guess I never thanked you for having started it Marc, but better later than never: Big THANK YOU!

In what regards ISO 21001, if anyone is interested in knowing more, just let me know (and thank you Sidney for sharing the news here).

Thanks for offering, Sandra. Can you tell what parts of 9001:2015 don't transfer into 21001?

The press release says that ISO 21001 is partially aligned with 9001:2015. Curious to know more about the partial alignment and the reasons behind it.

Hi again Sidney!

A bit of history to help understand the relation between ISO 21001 and ISO 9001:

Back in 2013, there where 3 groups at ISO developing 3 *education sector related" standards:

- TC176/WG5 was responsible for ISO: ISO 18420 (which was the upgrade of IWA2 to standard);

- JTC1/SC36/WG5 was responsible for ISO 36001 (which was the revision of ISO 19796); and

- TC232/WG3 was responsible for ISO 29990 (which was the revision of ISO 29990).

If these 3 projects would have proceeded as such, it would have been redundant and confusing for the market. Therefore, the ISO/TMB decided on Sep/2013 (Decision 101/2013) to:

- withdraw the ISO 18420 and ISO 36001 projects;
- establish PC288 and its WG1 to develop the ISO 21001 project; and
- put on hold the revision of ISO 29990 (and the decision on whether to withdraw it) to after ISO 21001 is published.

ISO 21001 is a management system standard and therefore shares with ISO 9001 (and all the other ISO management system standards) the High Level Text (HLT).

On top of that, as ISO 18420 was one of the core documents from where ISO 21001 emerged, and IWA2 contained the full text of ISO 9001 (because it was a sector application of ISO 9001), some of the non-HLT ISO 9001 text and structure are still there, as we tried to keep it aligned as possible and convenient.

I shall remark, however, that the amount of non-HLT ISO 9001 text in ISO 21001 has been decreasing as the draft develops, and currently, at the DIS, it is around 20%, not considering the many annexes of ISO 21001 - if we do, the percentage will drop significantly.
