Gummed Water Activated Packaging Tape causing Mildew?

Hello, I pack my product in cardboard boxes and seal it with gummed water activated tape. My costumer has been finding boxes that appear to have mildew on the boxes were the tape seals. What can I be doing wrong and is this possible. I'm I using to much water from the dispencer or is this something that is unavoidable. If anyone has experiences in this some help would be appreciated.

Cardboard (paperpulp) with perhaps starch based gum and water added ... also add the warmth or temperature of around 36 to 40'C ...is all a good home ground for molds and fungi growth.
Have you tried the BOPP tape instead ?

No I have not yet. Is there any way to use this tape and add something to it to prevent mold.

Years ago (in another lifetime) I used to work in shipping and receiving. We used gummed tape that was activated with water. After a while, the reservoir's brush would become clogged and we would have problems with mold forming on the brush which would then be passed to the tape. The supervisor wrote a WI for us to clean the reservoir and brush each time water was added to the reservoir. Because we would have to add water almost daily, the mold problem was eliminated.

Buy your tape from a maker that uses an anti-bacterial/fungal additive in their gumming adhesive.

Since you're in USA, make sure that the maker certifies that the additive is EPA registered. If your products are FDA regulated (foods/beverages, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices) or may have child contact, also require certification that the additive is safe/legal for secondary contact with that product type.

BOPP tapes are not with starch based adhesive and there is no water use. Hence you must not find the growth of molds / fungi caused by the use of BOPP tape.
Check other useability requirements before you make the change.

You could add a bactericide/fungicide to the wetting water, but you'd have to do a validation to determine whether that would actually work for the needed time in your environmental conditions.

Depending on the additive used, it also might be regulatorily impermissible if the material being shipped is subject to rules regarding packaging-material toxics, etc.
