Haimer Universal 3-D Sensor Calibration - No Calibration Needed?

Does anyone know how to calibrate a Universal 3-D Sensor? The manufacturers website says it does not require calibration. Fine, what is the best way to verify it to a known standard as I am sure there is no way my auditor will let me have a measureing device that is not calibrated. My first thought is use gage blocks but the measurement is so small I might not be in the right range using gage blocks. Any ideas?

What is the validity of calibration? This Universal 3-D Sensor has to be calibrated at a certain frequency recommended by the manufacturer using the method described by them. I suggest you request from manufacturer the following:

1) Instruction manual (if any),
2) Written description of the calibration method and frequency,
3) Calibration certificate

If it doesn't require calibration (but I doubt it), then it should be stated in the certificate.

On their web site it says: "No re-calibration of the unit is needed during a sensor probe change over." I don't see where it says the device its self doesn't need to be calibrated.

Has anyone heard of these or used one?

Since it is a measuring instrument for milling and EDM machines, I assume it isn't used to accept or reject product. That aspect should be considered.

Ka Pilo, I have the instruction manual, it has instructions for setting concentricity (a setup step) for after instrument has been clamped in the chuck and after prob time has been changed, but no calibration method and no calibration certificate.

Marc, Its not necessarily used for accept / reject but it is used to determine take off more material, which once you take off you can't add it so essentially it is a critical decision point.

I don't see the instructions for concentricity as a calibration with a frequency its more of a one and done once the probe is attached. And not referenced to a known standard so how can it be calibration?

I'm not sure if website printout stating that no calibration is required will suffice. I suggest you clarify this from the manufacturer.

Thanks, Audry. My understanding (and please - Others here correct me if I'm wrong) is that if one is referring to a standard (such as ISO 9001) which requires calibrated measurement equipment, the requirement is for measurement devices used to accept or reject product.

However your point is well taken - Whether required by a standard or not it would make sense for the device to be calibrated considering the potential $ of scrap aspect.

Hopefully some others here can help with this one. It's outside my personal field of expertise.

One last question - It didn't come with a calibration certificate from the manufacturer when you bought it, is that correct?

Ka Pilo, I don't think its sufficient as I find it hard not believe it doesn't need calibration of some kind and I think the auditor would be the same.
Marc, You are correct it does not come with a calibration cert from the mfg only the Instruction manual. I don't know the exact hard line of the ISO 9001 but I have always infered it to mean anything used for a critical decision (scrap would tie to your KPI's and be auditable from that stand point) If it were Automotive the device would certainly be on my control plan and from that standpoint would be auditable. Maybe you are right and I can ignore it because we are not TS16949 registered.

Thanks for the help guys - I will still be looking for a calibration method (as I think its the right thing to do) but maybe it can go to the back burner as it may not be an auditable issue?
