Not at all. Just effective planning. You said up there that the audit is in August and that the folks had already planned vacation. If these folks are so important to the audit, why didn't you schedule it when they weren't on vacation?
reschedule the audit, if the auditor was the first to ask for a change, they will usually try to work something out to meet your schedule, in my experience. (never accept a scheduling change without first checking availability of the players) If there is no way to reschedule have the person(s) who are scheduled for vacation to appoint someone to stand in for them. one of these options should work for you.
nothing. the system should cover it. Just as the system should run without him if he quit the week before the audit.
still - it's a pretty darn important event for a manager to miss.
Has anyone even approached the guy about bumping his vacation up or postponing it a week?

This may be naive of me to assume since I've never gone through this before, but isn't an auditor going to look for certain documents (drawings, job files, revision to drawings) and ask how certain processes are done (7.3 of ISO 9001:2000)?
Is there not a backup for this position? IMO What if something happened to this person and they were never able to return to work. Who would be able to take is place? No saying something will happen, but I had an auditor ask me a similar question. Which boiled down to if a person is absent for any reason who can perform that persons task.

Good question, here's the answer. His back-up received a job offer from Nasa and we couldn't match their offer. This happened about a month ago. We've been trying very hard to bring in an experienced design Engineer, but so far, no luck.
