Hello All,
Has anyone here set-up a quality clinic that can offer some suggestions on some of the pitfalls you might have come accross, things you would have done different? We are being requested by our UTC company to persue this and any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you mean like setting up employee training sessions to educate employees on measuring and inspection techniques?

The quality clinic requirment is a physical location where nonconformances are processed. This would include, containment, root cause analysis and "real" corrective actions which are to be tracked for effectiveness. Training as you mentioned will play a big part in implementation and sustainability

I'm not familiar with it by that name. Maybe one of the others here is.

In my days we called something similar to it a Material Review Board, but there wasn't necessarily one physical location for the board to meet, though often there was. Training wasn't held, but identification of training needs was a part of the process of Root Cause Analysis.

Hi!

I have worked as a customer of Hamilton Sundstrand and I had contact with Quality Clinic methodology. It is part of a big strategy to improve and sustain the quality of their products in order keep customer satisfaction.
It start with trainings of most of quality tools and then you create a team who is responsible to implemente the non-conformances data collection/monitoring, address relenteless Root Cause Analysis based on roboust investigation resources, and keep the continuous improvement flow working on.
In my opinion, it is something that you should accept as a way to improve the quality of your company. Also, you will be able to show your Quality Clinic Certification for your customers and future customers as an evidence of your commitment with quality. A recognition from a big company as UTC will give you good reputation in the market.

Thanks,
Sérgio

I would like to ressurect this thread.... I'm a Quality Engineer for a supplier of Hamilton Sundstrand and am charged with setting up a Quality Clinic. There is a difference of opinion in interpretation of the requirements.... My management thinks it is acceptable to have a separate area to lock up nonconforming material, some of which is processed by the clinic. I say that anything processed by the clinic must physically be in the clinic. Anyone have any insight on this? The HS slides seem to be a touch too vague.

Thanks!!!

Barb,

I have seen Quality Clinic's store nonconforming product various ways, from in the actual clinic (on shelves, racks, tables, etc) to separate locations (cages, bins, carts, etc). The main point is to have a designated area were you (or anyone) can see the flow of product that requires action.

The quality clinic I am part of uses both options. I have shelves in the clinic were product is moved from shelf to shelf depending on were in the process it is. I also use a hold area (which is fenced in and locked) for items that are to big to be placed on the shelves, but I have marked out locations on the floor to show were in the process that specific "patient" is.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Hi there,

My quality clinic concept is pretty different. Rougly, it is a deep audit system. The audit guys are called "doctors" and the production lines are the "patients".
There is a huge board where all lines are listed, and also their "health status" based in the audits we perform, which goes from Healthy, and falls to "Sick" or "Coma"
The audits sheets go very deep in the process, it goes in how do you write work instructions, if you have pokayokes controlled, training, maintenance checklist, etc.
In fact, in my point fo view, it goes deeper than VW VDA or Ford MSA, talking about Process terms, or daily basis job.
This Quality Clinic is part of monthly measurables for Production, and the goal is to increase health status, which it is affected considerably when a customer reject appears, or internal problems are known.
It tells you the points where a production line is suffering, they go to the surface where everyone can notice them.

Not to spoil the party, but do you have boards and "health status" for Top Management as well? People on the lines depend on the quality of leadership and the resources provided to them by Top Management. Holding the workers accountable for something they don't control is not a good practice and can be quite demoralizing.

Dr. Deming would have some concerns with the Quality Clinic concept. ;)

Just my :2cents:
