No more movie theatre visits for me. Now that I've got my own in-home deal, I simply wait for the movie to be rented and watch at home.
Yea, having my home theater has cut things down a bit. But... there was really no replacing seeing Spiderman 20 feet tall on the screen!

Speaking of memories:
In 1962, I went to see Lawrence of Arabia with a crew of about 20 jocks and other BMOC from my college. As I recall, we had a minimum of a six pack of beer each with us and had already drunk at least that much waiting for the doors to open to get into the theater.

We were rowdy (as college guys used to "privilege" were wont to be back then) and our rowdyism infected a mostly college age audience. When Lawrence receives his set of white robes and races off in the desert on his horse, then jumps off the horse and whirls around alone in the desert, we began to sing a rousing baritone and bass rendition of "I feel pretty!" (Maria's song from West Side Story in the movie the previous year and still playing in small local movie houses.)

When we got to the line
I feel pretty and witty and gay
the roar of laughter from the part of the audience who had actually studied that period of history turned to hisses and catcalls. Apparently, as I learned later, there was then, and continues to be, a big debate among historians about the sexuality of Lawrence, who was not known to have any female "dalliances" during his adult life. We drunks didn't know any of that, of course, we were just ridiculing the sight of a grown man dancing and whirling in the desert in pretty white robes.
MARIA
I feel pretty
Oh so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and gay
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me today
I feel charming
Oh so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real
See the pretty girl in that mirror there?
Who can that attractive girl be?
Such a pretty face
Such a pretty dress
Such a pretty smile
Such a pretty me!
I feel stunning
And entrancing
Feel like running
And dancing for joy
For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy
Chorus:
MARIA & GIRLS
I feel stunning
And entrancing
Feel like running and dancing for joy
For I'm loved
By a pretty wonderful boy

WOW!! You tapped on 6 of my favorites!!
The crowd makeup would change subtly for each of these showings at midnight:
Rocky Horror Picture Show - lots of dress up and a large crowd from "transsexual" Transylvania U.
The Grateful Dead Movie - lots more stoners and tie-dye
Brazil - Large contingent of psyche majors from Transylvania U.
Star Wars (the original 1977 version) - people who knew the difference between Basic and Assembly Language
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Same crowd as RHPS only they had memorized more lines
Kentucky Fried Movie - way more locals than University kids
The Wall (Pink Floyd) - same as the Dead movie only replace tie-dye with black
The Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin) - Leather, boots and chains crowd
2001: A Space Odyssey - An interesting mix of computer nerds and psyche majors
A Clockwork Orange - Very dangerous, looking for an excuse to throw punches crowd, this movie would get some people very worked up.

I would have to say A Clockwork Orange and RHPS were on my list of too screwed up to watch...I've never been able to make it through more than 30 minutes of either one...

But to keep on topic of the movie theatres today...I usually go for the big effects movies, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Nancy Drew :biglaugh:

Hey, Benjamin, this is the water cooler discussion!! We have a much larger net!

RHPS is one of my favorites. I don't know why. I've just seen it on DVD. My wife is more adventurous; she has gone to the theater. I do enjoy the soundtrack. For such a goofy movie and horribly shallow lines, pretty decent music IMHO.

OK, Wes. You quoted much of the entire movie. How much of the song did you remember from memory, and how much did you have to look up??

Funny this thread should be active now. I have agreed to go with my Aunt and her nephew to see Spiderman at the local theater tonight. It should be nice. The Pastime is an old theater that sat vacant for a decade or so before being resurrected by a couple who renovated it. Well, mostly. They did not reopen the balcony.

What they did do was add a small kitchen, and, along with popcorn and the usual fare, they offer steaks, burgers, chicken strips, etc. The theater seats were removed for small bars, parallel to the stage, and regular chairs.

This will be my first trip to the movies for, oh, 3 years or so. Maybe I can sit still long enough...

I rented the VHS when it was first released, way back in the late 80's. My wife didn't get it. It also wasn't nearly as fun quoting lines by myself. Dancing the Time Warp, throwing toast and rice, tossing cards, and my wife cowering under a newspaper while I sprayed water all over the room just wasn't the same as at the midnight movie.

In 1962, between us and the audience, we knew ALL the lyrics (kind of like listening to and singing the "Star Spangled Banner" at a ball game - you can pretty much follow along even when you don't know all the lyrics.) In 2007, I remembered the names of the movies, the scenes, the years they came out and these three lines:
" I feel pretty
Oh so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and gay"
because I've been telling the story for 45 years! I googled the lyrics for the post.
