Holy Moly! 1962? :mg: I wasn't born yet!
In 1952 we went to Saturday matinees for 14 cents, and saw 2 movies, like 3 Stooges or Lash LaRue, and a cowboy serial. The local joke was that if your shoes were dirty when you went in, they would be shinny when you came out due to the furry critters running around under the seats picking up dropped popcorn and candy.
We earned the 14 cents by picking up old soda bottles and turning them in for the refunds.

Cari,

 My long-overdue apologies for the rice, toast, newspapers, toilet paper, etc... I spent many a Saturday Night at the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Lakeside in those years.... man, those were great times!

Pity they closed that one. My group spent much time there as teenagers, shopping the mall then taking in a movie. (we behaved, other than RHPS, I promise!) Also went on my first date there!
LOL - don't sweat it - I worked behind the concession counter. The ushers were the ones who had to clean that up!

The theater at Lakeside closed up within a year or two of the opening of the AMC Theater across the street.

What good timing Brad M...I am five movies deep into a 27 film summer series at a local concert / cultural performance theatre. This is the reel deal (pun intended) :tg:: a classic theatre with a few opera boxes, velvet covered wooden seats, balcony (closed during restoration), big screen and great acoustics. Films so far have been mostly good (Miss Potter, Lives of Others) but last nights was semi-tedious (2.5 hrs+ on the lives of monks with French and German dialogue / english subtitles). These are mostly recent foreign / independent films with Wednesdays a single showing of a classic foreign (Seven Samurai, Wild Strawberries).

The program offered a "Golden Ticket" for the series at $200 which gives 2 admissions, 2 drinks & a large popcorn ($26 retail per movie). I was shocked :notme:when the wife prompted the purchase...she's more likely to hit the cineplex with the last teenage son for which her company sells discounted tickets (two types - matinees only or all shows).

Oh yeah, we have Netflix for the home theatre too.

So do you think after the adventure, would you prefer the independent/foreign films, or stick with the mainstream movies? I gotta tell you; I've seen some really good independent films (to be fair, i've seen some absolutely horrific ones also).

I've seen a number of really good foreign films...

The Fabulous Life of Amélie Poulain

Pans Labrynth

Run Lola Run

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

~to name a few, but I don't think I'd have an urge to see these on the big screen.

I posted earlier that the last ones I'd seen were The Lake House and The Devil Wears Prada, but I remembered last night that I also saw Night At The Museum. This was a great film for the family and I really enjoyed it. :tg:

I'm not sure if The Devil Wears Prada is considered a chick flick, but I did enjoy it.:tg:

I think that I have always enjoyed the mix of a small ratio :)of foreign / indie films...probably instilled during my college days during the 70's. Brown University had a very active Film Society, of which I took more than full (ahem) advantage of at the expense of other things, like (ahem), studying:notme:. No correlation to the academic probation that followed....nope, none:tg:.
