Re: Hazard identification for pest-control activities

Good day Minrah,

I would look at the materials and equipment with which the pest control activities are carried out.

Chemicals should have Material Safety Data Sheets or the modern SDS with which to determine effects of human exposure. Mechanisms with moving parts may have pinch points. This is all I can think of unless you tell us exactly what will be used in the pest control activities.

Minrah,

Work with your colleagues so you have reps from all parts of the business to provide their inputs and reach consensus. Their understanding and buy-in is essential, so is specificity for your company and each project so do not copy someone else's assessment.

First, determine the products and by-products (aka pollution to the air, water, ground and humans).

Then determine your processes for carrying out pest control and list the activities within these processes. Include the planning, purchasing and any disposal and cleaning processes. Also include transportation, inadvertent spilling and what happens when the amount of poison is overestimated.

These are your environmental aspects and you need to know which of these has or could have a significant impact (beneficial and adverse) on the environment in terms of:

  • Magnitude of impact
  • Frequency of occurrence
  • Speed of detection and correction
You could rank each of A, B and C between 1 and 5. Then add or multiply the rankings for each environment aspect according to their beneficial or adverse impacts.

Facilitate this assessment with your colleagues where to draw the line of significance/less than significant.

List your significant environmental aspects.

Then make sure your organizational management system has the necessary competences, controls, objectives and emergency routines to enable the significant beneficial impacts and prevent the significant adverse impacts.

You may need to repeat this when bidding for new projects (especially if they are unusual) so your bid includes the value, price and cost of any necessary operational controls.

John

Re: Hazard identification for pest-control activities

Chemical and Equipment were mentioned earlier, but I would like to add the following:
I would also be concerned about:
1. what kind of pest injuries you may have to deal with (bugs bites)
2. the surrounding (neighbors exposure to the fumes, waste disposal, working clothes laundry ...etc).
3. The permissible exposure limit.
4. Driving safely
5. Lifting, Ladders, and Housekeeping (including smoking, eating, working while injured or have scratch at your skin)
6. Hose and Pressure.

Pest Control Activity is being done by a 3rd Party Agency !
