How can you justify using a more accurate Pin Gage class?

Already done! I think this thread was created more out of just bewilderment that he had even brought that up as "point of concern," as he called it. Like I said, of course I understand that our internal scrap rate could have an effect on the customer and it's in everyone's benefit to reduce rejects, but just the way he got so philosophical about it and claimed that it could prove that our measurement techniques weren't up to par, like he was just reaching to make some kind of comment, made me scratch my head like Am I missing something here?

Thanks for your input!
If you work in a job shop and deal with customers on a regular basis, the default expectation should always be that the customer won't be making any sense. :bigwave:

I'm coming to this a bit late, but is the customer doing their own recieving inspections or other checks in addition to the inspections you are doing? Perhaps their concern was that you would be using a more accurate gage (xxx) but when thwy did their inspection with a less accurate gage (x) they would potentially be rejecting parts that you might have correctly accepted. This gage mismatch would give them concern that you were shipping them nonconforming parts and lead to lots of finger pointing.

I think you said that you also ordered them a similar set/class of gages, hopefully that will addrrss the problem.

On the other hand, not knowing your specific item and tolerances (and no mention of what quanty you are rejecting/screening-out), if the difference in gage class is making a substantial difference in liklihood of accepting/rejecting product, perhapse looking at the process capability is something you should investigate.

Sorry, i just re-read your original post, you clearly did state the tolerance, that you had rejects, and didn't meet 10:1. That being said, if you actually measure the parts, were your rejects because of conservative gaging or because you were making parts outside the tolerance? Probably additional reason to look at your process capability.

So the problem is that we aren't actually rejecting parts internally. They are escaping our facility and getting rejected by the customer. we have yet to measure any production parts with the more conservative gaging (the Class XXX pins), but we did sort the parts that the customer rejected with the Class XXX pins and we were not able to confirm their rejections. So. The Class X and Class XXX pins are correlating for the rejected lot.

So you have entered the dreaded world of the hard gauging tolerance dispute.
These are often bloody battles without survivors.

Your best bet might be to recommend sending the "bad" parts off to an unbiased third party, that your customer agrees to, for their judgement.
