How can you tell if Flame Retardant "kicks off" in plastic?

We a plastics compounder.

Recently, we produced 3 compounds containing FRABS. We think that due to our process (too fast) the flame retardent "kicked off". This resulted in the product becoming really specky, and almost black when the customer processed it.

Are there any tests that can tell us if the FR gets kicked off?

What flame retardant was used?

What does "kicked off" mean, i.e. what chemical reaction are you describing?

I do not know what type of FR is being used. It is already pre-compounded in the FRABS we purchase. Specifically PA765 FRABS.

Basically, "kicked off" means that due to processing the flame retardent is no longer able to do it's job. It the material is over-processed, it will destroy the properties of the FR.

I think you're going to need to know what the FR chemistry is, how much is present and what else is present before you can understand what destructive reaction is occurring during processing and to what extent; and you're going to need to understand that in order to figure out how to measure or otherwise characterize the post-processing FR status via testing.
