How did you survive your childhood?

Born in '67, so I fit in there somewhere. I lived for riding my bike, only time I ever broke a bone (hit a no-parking sign at full speed at night on a hill, it was in the middle of the sidewalk, not the edge). Then a week later I rode in yet another bike-a-thon for Juv. Diabetes with cast and all, forget how many miles...

I remember skate boarding for a short period, no pads whatsoever... Got bored with it before I hurt myself.

Hiked thru many local woods, wasn't a big sports fan even then. Never kept back a grade but knew kids that did...

I do remember my electronic Tank game (around the time of Pong), then my Atari 2600, but still rode my bike alot...

Survival

Born 1955 - so fit into this well.

Grew up in rural area so can identify with tadpole and crawfish hunting.

Remember lots of tree climing and vine swinging. Fell off of several.

Nail through my foot.

In and out of barns and chicken coops (soooo unsanitary)

Hunted - We each (three of us boys) started carry a gun at age 13. Got a shotgun for Christmas age 14.

Riding in the back of a Stake-bed truck, hanging on the stakes.

None of us five kids broke any bones (never understand how that happened)

Sled riding in the caow pasture (interesting surprise moguls)

Gathered eggs, watched the chickens get butchered, scalded, plucked and cleaned.

Tried to raise baby rabbits that got caught under mowing machines. (they always died)

Nearly had an eye put out by my cousin shooting a toy arrow that had the rubber tip removed.

Cut grass with mowers that didn't stop when you took your hand off the handle.

Had a pretty great kidhood

Born in 1943

Surrived most all the stuff that's been listed.
But one I'll never forget that I survived. When I was 17 I came into possession of a 1947 Indian Chief motorcycle. I weighed about 130. The bike was big, heavy, fast.
Shift lever on side of gas tank, and a suicide clutch.
Was drinking a few beers one summer night after dark, and decided to go visit a female friend who lived out in the country. Took the back roads to travel a special road with a big dip in the middle. Was fun going over this in a car because it would almost go airborne for a second. Decided to try it on the big Indian, was going about 70 and hit the dip...was fun going up, but not coming down. When the bike hit the pavement, I came down over the front of the handle bars and the I was on the front fender from my head to my waist. Backed off the gas and it wobbled, but I kept it straight and slowed down enough to get back in the seat. Drove slowly to her house after, and heart was still pounding, whew! Scared me. Sold it to a State Patrolman shortly there after. He was a big guy and had a ball with it.

Thank you for sharing

:applause: Thank you very much for all of your replies. Reading through the thread made me laugh. It kinda bring back the child in me hiding for so many years. I started to work at the age of 10...but I never missed my share of childhood!;)

Here's my story... I was born on the 70's...had ridden on a water buffalo (we call it carabao locally):tg: and a cow. When I got on the cow it wiggled and I ended up swimming on cow dung!:mg: :yuk: missed the horse though:horse: would not let me on.:lmao:

Climbed a mango tree with lots of ants...swallowed some grasshoppers...yum...yumm... ate some wild fruits and berries( I did not know which of them was poisonous but I did remember ending up in an emergency room) and my favorite...trekking in the woods and take a bath after on the water falls! Cool...

Born in '61. Small ranch, very close neighbors, the old garage in the back yard, lots of driveway space...played volleyball using the telephone lines for a 'net' - the neighbors storm sewer was the 2nd base, ours was home plate. Shrubs served as 1st and 3rd.

We walked to school (about 1/2 a block) which is why my folks built this house. When we were 'old enough' played ball on the school field instead of the back yard.

Everyone had a basketball hoop, so the b-ball games were 'the Lakers' vs. 'the Cavs'.(or Nets, or Celts)...and if the visiting team won, we were 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' (don't know when I'll be back again) that we sang as we walked 100ft to the neighbors driveway.

Oh - and tether ball? The pole with the ball that you beat the crap out of until it wrapped the pole? We had one. That was much better exercise than a video game. Can you still buy one?

We were near a woods with a 'low spot' so if it froze, impromptu hockey. And my parent put 4 kids in a VW beetle, one on the front pass lap. Not saying that was 'safe' by todays standards, but at the same time, I think folks drove a whole lot smarter and courteous back then. I think that's one reason why my folks now don't like being on the road as much.

Seeing guns mentioned made me remember my BB gun!

Straight out of Xmas Story: All presents opened, dad says "I think Santa forgot one", and goes to basement. Comes back, mom's looking at him saying "WHAT did you get him??". Opened the package, sure enough a Daisy Red Rider BB Gun!

This was about 1975-6 so I was about 9 or so. I kept it awhile, even took it to school! I went to Cincy Academy of Phys Ed for awhile & they had archery & BB guns as classes!! Doubt they'd do that today...

My grandpa ended up buying it off of me to please my mom. I got it back when I got out of the Navy in 1991, along with his other BB gun. Still have them both.

PS - Never shot a real weapon before, even in 6yrs of the military...

This really is a good subject givenm how so much has changed. The risks of getting shot or stabbed while at school may now exceed the risks of falling out of treehouses.

Social isolation, free access to digital pursuits (chat rooms and MySpace.com are eupemistically called online social places) and questionable material like Anarchist's Cookbook and less supervision at home have created, in my view, a social tinderbox for our kids. Just this month there have been 3 or 4 school shooting plots uncovered.

What should be done?

I was a social outsider (not being in the popular group) but I had band all through middle and high school, where I could be in company with people who accepted me for my merits.

You know, I really cannot say that any more kids have carried a gun or knife into the school that my children attend than carried them into the school I attended. I think that today's infractions receive a lot more press than they did "back in the day". Maybe I just went to a really tough school? I know that I saw weapons daily back then, drug deals, fights, the whole nine yards. In a way, I think I'm lucky, cuz I know what to look for, I am aware, and I can not only keep a watchful eye on my children, but educate them on what to look for.
