How do I tell my boss I'm not qualified to do Internal Audits?

So I've been here at this tiny software consulting company of 9 for a little over a year. We registered with PJR to the ISO 9001:2000 standard almost exactly a year ago and I was the MR for the initial Registration audit, but I was fairly new at the company and quality then. Now that I've been here a while, I realize that I cannot do this, and now we're about to have the audit (it's next week). For some examples:

I've begged for someone to help me with the internal audit since I can't audit myself, but no one is assigned. It should have been finished a month ago.

I'm considered the Management Representative, but I'm not a member of Management by any stretch of the imagination. Nor do I want to be. I'm not included in management meetings, and I can't demonstrate that management review has been conducted. (Particularly on the internal audit that hasn't happened yet)

I could go on, but I'm beginning to think I'm just here to be the fall guy. I don't know if this is the kind of thing anyone here could have insight about anyway, but I needed to get it off my chest.

Thanks,
Rene

That seems to be a little problem. It actually states that you cannot audit your own work. Is there someone around that might be (and competent) to perform the audit of the work you have performed?

There is nothing that I am aware of that requires you to be part of Management, just the authority to bring any issues to Management's attention and take appropriate action.

Sometimes that happens, but don't give up, keep trying to do your best.

According to 5.5.2, "Top management shall appoint a member of management who, irrespective of other responsibilities, shall have responsibility and authority that includes...".

Registration was obtained without this requirement being met? Something doesn't sound right here...

In my opinion, if you are given the authority to take appropriate action (as required) and you have the authority to bring issues to Top Management, than that would meet the intent of the standard.

Anyone else have an opinion regarding this requirement?

That is a good question Gidget. I really don't want to start a Battle over competent Registrars.

Actually there was a related finding, that I wasn't specifically named (with my name) in the manual. This was rectified by adding my name to the manual and to the org chart. How it is that in an organization of 9, where the owner, her husband, her nephew and the Lead Developer are all members of management that they would pick me as the MR. That would mean more than half of us are management? I even pointed it out in my first internal audit...

I should point out that I do have other responsibilities. Not sure it makes the difference now though. It's done; we're registered. Now what do I do? :bonk:

Would contracting the internal audit to an outside consultant or company be an option for your company? Or perhaps there are some ASQ folks in your area who would like the audit experience and may come in and do it for you....?

You say that you were "considered the MR". So, top management didn't appoint you as the MR? Is there anyone else in the company who would be more "qualified" to do it?

Hopefully, someone else here can offer more options for you...:cfingers:

Very good points. Check with your Local ASQ Chapter and see if there is someone that might be able to help.

Also, there are a few consultants that frequent The Cove.
