How do you identify job burnout?

My advice is to get your priorities straight. Family and health before work. As a successful quality professional I did the 10 - 12 hrs 6 day a week thing for 6 years at a company. Came in to work one day and they had to "restructure" to cut costs so the Quality Manager (me) went. They did have a sound QMS and gave me a great package. About 10 weeks later started again and back in the same vicious cycle. Then 15 months later was let go with the rest of the management team. So after working at only 3 places in 21 years I lost 2 jobs in less then 2 years!. Well I now found the right fit which included a 20% pay cut and I couldn't be happier. I am now working for a small company (<75 people) and have the task of implementing ISO9001:2000. Remember it's only money, life is too short. My philosophy now is limit my days to 10 hours and what's the worse thing that can happen? I didn't have a job before I started so I would be unemployed again. I landed back on my feet both times in less then 10 weeks. It's ironic but me wife is now going through the same thing and I tell her everday to quit and find something else. Hope things work out the best for you!

I don't even do a lot of overtime - in fact, I barely do any OT anymore. I was putting in a few extra hours before, but then realized that I wasn't being compensated for it - so why? Time-in-lieu is sort of political around here - because I'm salary, I'm expected to put in the time to get it done. My boss manages time here and there, but it's not the norm. Besides, with the two-and-a-bit hours of commuting, on a typical day I'm out the door at 6:30am and in the door at 5:45pm...which is a long enough day for me.

I rarely bring work home, as I don't have a laptop. I borrow one on occasion, but that's not all that common. I've worked from home two or three times within the last 6 weeks or so. It was an attempt by my boss to give me a little "time away"...which is nice in that I don't need to get dressed and deal with the traffic, but which also makes me paranoid that I have to come back in with results so that they don't assume I've been watching TV all day!

Rachel-girl, yikes...come on out to Milton and I'll take you on one of my training walks. It's a 50 minute walk to Dairy Queen and a 50 minute walk back...we'll work off that Peanut Buster Parfait and get some sun while we're at it!
Thanks for the offer, Rox - I might just take you up on that! May have to sub a Skor blizzard for the parfait, though...mostly because I get a chuckle every time they turn it upside down to prove that it's thick. Why is that funny?...I don't know.

As a follow up I wasn't compensated for the hours either. I was just playing the part of the faithful, loyal employee. If nothing else works you can remember the advice given to Kent Dorfman (aka Flounder) by Daniel Day (aka D-Day) in the film classic Animal House ........ My advise to you is drink heavily!!!! (only kidding, we all know that isn't the answer). I will try to stay politically correct but when I was going through my issues I spent a lot of time prayer and talking with my pastor. Remember, things happen for a reason!!

Sitting here, trying to tie up the loose ends of a report, and wondering whether I should print this thread out and show it to my boss when I make my case for vacation? :biglaugh:

I work to make a living, I'm not living to work. I missed a great deal of time with my first 3 children due to my committment to the US Navy, I'm not missing out on Renee growing up.

The fact that I really like what I do is a bonus.

BTW Renee had her first real physical yesterday (she's 4 now) and the doctor told us that "she has the eyesight of a 5 year old (I don't know what that means) and that's the good news. The bad news is, she has the vocabulary of a 13 year old and the attitude of a 16 year old. Good luck with that one.":truce:

This may sound crazy, Rachel, but it works for me.
:biglaugh:
If the stress has gotten frantically overwhelming, don't get sad, get mad. When/where noone can see you, throw a paperclip as hard as you can. It has, so far, never hurt anything, feels good, uses up a little adrenaline, and the stupidity of throwing a paperclip makes me calmer.

Also, did you know that if you force yourself to have a big grin on your face for one full minute, it's almost impossible for it to not become real, just because it feels and looks ridiculous?

Don't let the ******** get you down!

Hello H. Majhenich, and welcome to the Cove :bigwave:Actually, it does not sound crazy. Particularly that latter hint of yours has a lot of merit.

Good point...oftentimes, those "crazy" ideas are the most therapeutic! My last job, we had low cubicle walls between us...and our best therapy was beachball volleyball. You'd be on the phone and get beaned in the head by a beachball, but it was a lot of fun! The floor I was on was shared by Manufacturing Engineering (my department), Purchasing, I.T., Design Engineering, and R&D people. I think management got a laugh by putting all the stressed out departments together...and our cure was several beachballs floating around. (until management forbid them  )

My current job has higher cubicle walls, keeping us in groups of 2-4 depending on location. I'm in a group of 2, thankfully. But when the stress gets to us (Engineering, Environment and Management Systems), we've learned how to use elastic bands as ammunition and to angle them up with the ceiling tiles so that they'll riccochet into our targets. :D I've had one "casualty" however....an innocent bystander walked into my line of fire after I had released the elastic band. He took it in the chest.

Rachel,
I was sitting here at my desk, looking for some information when I happened upon this thread. I don't have time to get on the Cove like I would like to, but every once in a while I have a few minutes.

If I hadn't known better, I would have thought it was me writing. I thought I was losing my mind because I can't remember, focus, or concentrate on anything for very long. Been to doctor. Stress and depression. Joined a health club for women. Helps some. Do you have a pet? They help tremendously. I have a 4 wheeler that I ride.

Is yours better? Let me know what you did that helped you.

Bev.
