Beyond what Jennifer has provided

Leadership.........providing resources, perfroming reviews and establishing the policy

Involve people.....training, competency development, internal audits

Well defined process.....identify processes necessary to achieve customer satisfaction

Continual improvement...starts with policy, we then have objectives

Fact based decisions...input into management review, analysis of data


The list can go on and on...

I just read the standard and quoted where I found references to "customer."

People make all of this too difficult. It's all about learning what the customer wants, designing processes to correctly make that "what", using the customer specifications for checking to see if it's right, then asking if it was right; then acting on that information to make it even better next time. People knew how to do this long before ISO 9001 came out. The standard merely provides a framework to design business processes so nothing gets overlooked.

What ISO 9001 does not do is make sure the quality is, in fact good. That is up to the business.

Marc, absolutely, we all have lots to learn from each other. That is a given. I believe that me and my arch-nemesis, Captain Grumpy :tg:(just kidding!) are a little bit more sensitive to the issue of people coming here, clearly looking for a quick and "expert" answer to a blatant academic assignment, but doing it in a disingenuous manner. Both me and my buddy Randy teach this and can easily spot classroom assignment questions.

The "problem" (if there is any problem) with that is the fact that the pupil will not do any critical thinking or research, in order to develop a meaningful response to the assignment. S/he will just cut and paste well thought out responses, such as the ones provided by Jennifer, and "take all the credit". One could consider that "cheating".

In my opinion, anyone could come here looking for others to help them with this type of academic assignment. They should just be upfront about the situation and not pretend it is something else. Transparency should prevail. Always.

Where do they teach this "4 Pillars" idea? I believe I saw another post on that some months ago.

I was never taught that. And it was never mentioned in any of the ASQ cert exams I took.

I never heard of it either. I went with what I was given and took my best shot.

While I may have made things too easy for our young proteges, once having met with success one time they will probably be back. We can teach them the search function then.

Use of the term "Four Pillars" is ubiquitous, similar to "top ten list" "top three list" and so on. There is NO generally accepted list of four pillars of quality or quality management or anything else. Like all lists, it is merely a convenient and arbitrary grouping of items intended as a mnemonic device.

So - You're saying that since you were never taught about the the 4 Pillars, and it wasn't on any ASQ test you took, the 4 Pillars do not exist?

Note: I'll have to look it up, but I KNOW I have a presentation somewhere on the 4 pilars from at least 15 years ago.
