How does a Team Leader guide a team and resolve a problem

I am looking for simple and straight forward example to guide team or troouble shoot problem if you are working in Quality Assurance and you are leading team mebmbers in production area

OK...1st, If you're in charge then be in charge. Encourage discussion and debate but in the end if you're in charge be able to make a decision and stand by it. Don't be wimpy or wishy-washy, have a backbone and stand up straight..

2nd....Troubleshoot? Then be honest and have integrity. Don't fix blame and don't focus on people, look at process, and always ask at least one more question when you think you have the answer.

Thanks in advance

  1. Identify the problem. What is the expectation (specifications or other documented requirements)? Make sure everyone agrees on the nature of the problem, but be prepared to make a decision if there's no consensus.
  2. Do your best to determine how much the problem is costing.
  3. Identify the variables that might contribute to the problem.
  4. If necessary, test the variables independently of one another, but try to reach a point where you can turn the problem on and off by manipulating the variables.
  5. Once a cause has been identified, determine the most cost effective (see #2) way of fixing it, then fix it.
  6. After a predetermined amount of time has elapsed, verify the effectiveness of your fix.

I agree with simple structure in resolving a problem, however details often come into play where more granularity are necessary. I would advise books on 6sigma and especially DMAIIC methodology. J&J had a wonderful program of training on this with sponsors, problem, and monitoring.

DEFINE the problem is first and may take a week or more during which involvement of all knowing parties must be present. Once the definition is generally agree upon, gather related data, analyze it (with discussion), create solutions, test, and review data after changes have been made.

Gathering all relevant data to substantiate the problem may take that long or even longer. I believe that's what the OP implied. In addition, it depends on the definition of "define." ;) I can come up with a decent description of a problem in a fairly short time, but it may take me longer to collect the relevant data.

Be careful not to confuse a symptom with a problem. Sometimes you may think that you have identified the problem and even a solution, but always look for the bug behind the symptom.

This is where a team helps the most, and is best done with a discussion if everyone is at the same location at the same time, or with a forum thread if not (like this thing here).

Then address the root cause, not the immediate cause. Don't troubleshoot; take corrective action.

Have another look at what I was responding to. Firnum said that it might take a week or more to define the problem, and then the data-gathering can begin.

Good advice regarding symptoms vs. problems, but you confuse me when you refer to "the bug behind the problem." Did you mean the "bug" behind the symptom?
