Friends,

Simple ISO 9001:2000 QMS benefit equation: (Commitment + Effort) = (Customer Satisfaction + Profit)

Re: How had your organization benefited from implementing ISO 9001?

We have only seen limited benefits in our system. We do have a much better knowledge of who is responsible for processes and steps within each process; however, a lack of management commitment and a lack of caring from the customer that made it a contractrual requirement has created a rather "dead" system.

We are left with creating the paperwork to make it look like we are using it when we are not (at least not to the point that I would like to see it).

Re: How had your organization benefited from implementing ISO 9001?

Like everything else in life; diets, medication, education etc., they benefit us in different ways. One client had such robust systems in place that doing 'ISO' was only a very small benefit. Nothing to do with getting or keeping more business because of registration - that's a bit hokey anyway, because it's your performance that matters to a customer in the end.

Other organizations who have a less mature approach to business can benefit to a greater degree.

So it isn't a simple, one size fits all 'equation', only a reflection of how far a business 'goes' in maturing it's approach to doing business, through a systematic approach to process management.

Re: How had your organization benefited from implementing ISO 9001?

A slightly different view is that many companies benefit from ISO by keeping existing contracts or winning new ones.
This has to be our only benefit for becoming ISO certified. We were required by some of our current customers to become ISO certified in order to keep them. If it were not for those certain customers we would never have become certified.

In the long run it has caused us to do a lot more paper work that means nothing to us, only to the auditors. It has slowed our production down, which in turn, we lose money by not being able to get more product out do to all the extra steps that were added.

Hello Shawnann,

If that has been your experience, the system was never well designed to start with. The idea is that it helps you rather then an impediment to productivity. Has this ever been discussed during management review? Because that's the forum to decide how the system can be modified and improved. But if the mindset is "paperwork", that's hard to overcome. I hope you'll find some ideas here in The Cove to help you.

What our organization gained from a continuing ISO 9001:2000 program was an improved customer feedback process.

There are obvious problems with your implementation. If you seriously want to get some value from your program, get hold of one of the good consultants on this Cove, and get some help. There are a number of us available.

It is unfortunate that you do not receive more benefit. It is available if you want it.
