How many of you would say you have or use good visuals in the shop. For example visual boards that show the correct flow of product, flowcharts, signs, process maps, etc.

Also - please give some examples of visuals that you use or have seen in use. Thanks.

Visuals

This is so new for our plant. My goal is to have enough information gathered to visually display, on the floor, the flow with the requirements tagged within the visual.

We can't eat the dinasaur in one bite.

Visual aids are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately there is a process that needs to be followed to ensure that the correct visual aids are used. Usually after a corrective action. Agree or not, there are many people in the workforce that cannot read or write in their adopted countries language and visuals are the only way to go.

I'm posting from home, so I'll have to skip the examples for now. First of all, let it be known that I think we need more as well as better visuals, but still... We have some good stuff:

An increasing number of flowcharts / process maps in our procedures. The place is also littered with thin client PC's giving us the option to make good use of our intranet. We have lots of graphs and stuff and all our written procedures available there. Some good, and some not so good, but getting better all the time.

Symbols and pictures are wonderful things, Al. I'm sure you can find the right bathroom in any airport in the world, even Japan! When all else fails, use photos.

The truth, of course, is that any visual, just as any process or product, should follow the Deming [and others] PDCA cycle to ensure the intended audience is able to follow the meaning and intent without ambiguity.

I'm known as a visual thinker at the Cove and at my Ford location.
Feel free to access the not too few  visual mind maps that I have posted at the Cove.
This is where Claes and I are similar thinkers.
I'm having great success at this time with the use of Mind mapped information visuals. I have found that the multicultural environment of Ford of Canada ensures the use of visuals in conjunction with linear formats too.
Flowcharts are an excellent format of communications too IMO.
Unfortunately, in the times in which we live, we must needs "Dumb down" information for the sake of clarity in a multicultural workforce.
Wallace.

Maybe not so much "dumb down" as "smarten up" old, tired ways of presenting information. I sure don't feel like you and Claes are taking me through kindergarten when I look at the stuff you two have prepared. Most times, I'm envious at how clearly you have presented info.

Those of us who are experienced recognize that the person behind the "cartoons" has to know a lot to make them understandable to a wildly variant audience.:applause:

Tom,

We use a lot of motivational type posters in our final products area where operators pack our products into bags and then onto trucks or into containers. They also take our final samples in these areas. I think one of the biggest things people forget to do is actually change these signs from time to time. People WILL forget a sign is there if it is not changed often enough. It needs to be either moved, a new sign put up or similar sign in a different style or colour to ensure you catch their eye. if you have ever seen the great experiment 'Gorillas in the Midst' you will know what I mean (IN SHORT - a group watches a basketball game and then are asked about a Gorilla that walks thru the scene - Noone saw the Gorilla). We also have to back our posters and messages up with meetings (pre start and post production) and reinforcement (ongoing training). As Wes stated - PDCA.

We use a lot of Process flow maps (I have posted many on the Cove). We , along with a lot of people, probably suffered a bit from 'Death By Powerpoint' syndrome but we are drifting away from that and are trying to make presentations suit the target audience better and working smarter. Our presentations now involve more role playing, activities and involvement from the audience. This seems to reinforce the particluar message given rather than rely on the PP presentation to keep them awake.

Ok, back at work... Some examples:

  • Traffic lights showing the CAR status (from our intranet)
  • A translated audit process map (Our stuff is normally in Swedish, of course...
  • Now that mindmaps came up: See How do we promote creativity?
