How Many PPAPs? We currently submit 160+ PPAPs per year

I work for a manufacturer that supplies machined component parts to a major heavy industial OEM. We have approximately 120 employees. My question is more research in nature rather than an inquiry as to what is correct or not. We currently submit 160 + PPAPs per year. I was just wondering if anyone could provide feedback on what they are experiencing and how many resources are applied to meet the demand. Thanks

We have 11 plants, each submitting between 10 and 20 new PPAPs per month. Each plant has one quality specialist who handles new and re-submitted PPAPs. PPAPs are just a small part of the specialist's quality responsibility.

I was the PPAP coordinator at a couple of jobs and, as Dave says, that was my major responsibility but I also ran the CMM and did other quality/inspection functions.

One place was a $50M/year stamping plant - tier one supplier to GM - 3 shifts - approximately 800 employees. I was juggling 10-20 new PPAPs a month. The other place was about half the size and I probably only had max 10 new PPAPs a month.

When I was working in the sheetmetal prototype business we would occasionally get a contract for a low volume / short run production part. I handled the PPAPs at those places too but I only had to submit 1 or 2 per year.

We are a tier-one supplier to big 3, small to medium stamping and welding assemblies, about 150 people. I am also a PPAP coordinator. We somethime did about 20 PPAP a month when we won mutiple parts in a new program, sometime only 3 to 4 a month. We seldom do re-PPAP, only PPAP for new parts or for engineering changes. On average, about 6 to 8 a month.

Hi Guys,
If our customer does not require some of the requirements in the PPAP e.g. AAR, Qualified Laboratory Documentation, would a customer waiver can be used as evidence for this? :frust:
Please advise.

Short answer is yes. The customer can waive pretty much anything they want to. Be sure you get the waiver in writing and keep it as part of the PPAP documentation.

Be sure you are certain of the difference between waiving the requirement and not requiring the submission of the document. Many times a customer will say they don't need a capability study (example) but what they really mean is you need to do one but you don't need to submit it to them with the PPAP.

Communication is the key to good customer/supplier relationships. If there is any doubt at all, don't be afraid to ask.
