I agree, and the line is often blurry. It is not always so easy to define waste...
Some would consider visiting the Cove a waste of time, and yet I feel certain that what I have learned here and applied at work pushes has saved time for me and been useful to the company.
Besides, how often do we discuss work during our free time?

I'm with you on this issue Claes. Generally I believe that the focus is all wrong in this type of discussion. It is all about how many hours of "work" you put in, and not about the quality of the work. Let's be honest: How many of those who put in 50, 60, 70 hours of work actually perform work of a quality that can stand scrutinizing?? I truly believe that a lot of the worst decisions are made by managers who do not know when to go home and take care of their families. The same managers do not want to admit that they have made a bad decision and stick by it....
Good management is about making sure that everybody performs to the best of their abilities, with a sound respect for their personal circumstances,
and knows how to delegate responsibility and the power to perform.
I can not subtract the amount of time I spend sleepless thinking about my job, why should they be bothered about the time I spend on the cove or outside smoking in the blizzard?? Besides, I really learn a lot here, especially about the proffessional approach to quality.
