How often do you have to repeat a Gage R&R study?

Ninja - what exactly do you mean by "Gage R&R"?

AIAG uses a repeatability and reproducibility study design that they call Gage R&R. Many Customers require this Gage R&R to be performed to qualify the appropriateness of the gage system. However, this is a very restrictive subset of the use of repeatability and reproducibility.

Simply because a term has a common or popular meaning doesn't mean that it is correct.
Point well taken.

Is there an existing thread around here outlining these differences? I haven't come across one.

Having burned my AIAG manuals in a Wiccan ceremony when I left the automotive industry, I now use the term MSA almost exclusively. I do this simply because I want people in my organization to recognize and utilize all of the appropriate analyses. We do have a detailed guidance document that describes each analysis and when each is appropriate or required to use.

That sounds like a cool start already.

Any of that document you are at liberty to share or paraphrase?

This is the version of the document that I can - and have - shared
Measurement Systems Verification and Validation. This document doesn't cover every analytical approach under the MSA umbrella

I also use MSA as an integral part of problem solving which can have many differnt customizations and 'acceptability' criteria.

I can start a new thread later to have further discussion as we are movign away from the OP's original question

In my industry most metrology tools are these very large, several ton, stationary, automated pieces of equipment. And they reside in temperature and humidity controlled cleanrooms.

We usually get into arguments with our automotive customer about frequency of GRR. Our policy is that GRR is done when a tool is qualified for production (at the time of install) or when a major change to the tools is performed. Change could be a change in the optics, hardware, software or just moving the tool. Other than that we do not repeat GRR. It just does not make sense to repeat these.

We monitor our metrology tools with SPC charts. We calibrate them quarterly. Appraiser variation typically zero. Operators just pres a button and the tool automatically picks up the part and measures it. Any degradation of the tool would be captured by our SPC tool monitor, Calibration and Preventive Maintenance activities.

hmm.
there is no need to repeat a GR&R for a characteristic. GR&R should be - for most uses - a once and done thing unless you get a new measuring system. (moving from verniers to CMM or from human visual to a vision system for example). ANd this is not required in most standards. There may be some silly Customers who require it tho - and that's a sign that they don't understand MSA.

On the other hand, a NEW part/characteristic should (and it's usually required in the various standards) have a new GR&R even tho the instrument is sophisticated adn has passed GR&R on other characteristics. (the exception to this of course is the use of characteristic 'families' that are logically created). In the case of automated equipment where no substantive human intervention is used, the reproducibility part can and should be omitted.

Re: Gauge R&R studies - How often do you have to repeat a gage R&R study?

Hello everyone,

I would like to know if there is someone who can help me regarding one question. According to MSA we have to do the R&R study for ALL the gages or we can do it by "families"? For example, if I have 5 manual caliper rule can I do the study only for one caliper?

I Thank You in advance
