How RTY (Rolled Throughput Yield) applies to different industries

We are a manufacturing facility that specializes in high speed CNC maching, mainly brass and copper. The management team was recently challenged with developing and implementing an RTY metric. RTY itself is very straight forward, however, how to apply to our specific industry is challenging. It was requested that we apply it by part and apply it by machine. We have about 120 different machines that manufacture in the neighborhood of 10K different parts. My thought is that we can use RTY to evaluate processes if used in short intervals, not looking at things on a monthly basis or longer. I don't believe that RTY was intended to be applied for machine evaluation. That is more of an efficiency application. The other variable is some of our parts may have 6-9 processes they go through. Any guidance or thoughts on how we could apply this would be greatly appreciated. I think what has happened is that someone at corporate saw or heard that RTY was "a really neat metric to make the plant report", without understanding it's true basis of application and that it is really intended to identify processes where improvements can be made. I agree with you that it should be applied to processes, and not machines or parts. It is probably more applicable if you can apply RTY by lines that exhibit similar characteristics or use similar processes, and then do your comparisons to monitor performance that way. Not too long ago, I attached a short presentation in this post that we used for internal training on the true application of RTY (Rolled Throughput Yield).
