How to Balloon Drawings using Excel

For you Excel gurus, or those who may have seen this issue before. I couldn't find another forum here that seemed more appropriate for this question, and Google has been no help on this question, so here goes.

I have been using a custom Excel workbook to create PPAP documentation for several years. When Ballooning a drawing, I will often (but not always) convert the original drawing file to JPEG, import the image to a work sheet within the PPAP workbook, and then use autoshapes & text boxes to number the characteristics.

For some reason this particular one will print the autoshapes & text boxes, but the JPEG image refuses to render (see attached).
* Everything looks fine in print preview.
* The "print object" box is checked in image properties.
* Moving the worksheet to a separate workbook does nothing to help.
* Converting to PDF (rather than printing) produces the same result.
* 4 different computers have produced the same result.

I have already worked around the issue by using the "pen & ink" method, but you know how we Quality people are... just solving the problem isn't enough - I want to know why it was broke in the first place.

Thanks in advance, everybody.
:thanx:

Re: issue with Balloon drawings using Excel

I do not know the solution to your problem but a site I often use for excel questions is http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/index.php . Others in the Cove may be able to solve this issue but I thought I would give you another avenue to have your problem solved.

PS Be sure to include the version of Excel that you are using.

I create all of my numbered prints in Excel and this is a common issue. If the image being copied is too large, I get the effect you showed in the attachment.

The trick is to reduce the resolution of what you are copying. An easy way to do this is with Microsoft Paint and it comes with Windows. Open the image with Paint. Open the pull down menu and stretch/skew. This is where a WAG comes in. You want it smaller, but not so much that it is illegible.

Good Luck!

it's hard to know if we don't see an example, (not the output but the worksheet).
It could be the worksheet format or a configuration for Excel such as draft printing (I dunno if that exists). Because you tested in a pdf file, the printer is not the problem.

If you open or convert your drawing in pdf and than make a snapshot of the drawing you can past it into Excel, this works better than past it as an (jpeg)image.
If pdf Reader gifs a poor result try Brava Reader.

Here is how I handle this type of issue.

You want to place a graphic in Excel.
Graphic "means" PowerPoint, therefore, place your drawing into a PP slide and add your bullet numbers and what else you wish to 'apply' on top of the drawing using the drawing tool bar or by importing other graphics.
When you have completed your 'slide', select all of the objects on the slide, copy them, and then "paste special" as an 'Picture (Enhanced Metafile)' or as a 'Device Independent Bitmap' the image in your Excel worksheet. A Bitmap image will create a better looking image, but is much larger than a Metafile.

If you have very large images to begin with, you may which to segment them into smaller (and more usable) slides / pictures.

Note: This also works in Word, but it is easier to create the 'picture', copy it, and place it into the document via the simple paste function.
(It relate to text wrapping issues.)

Note2: Be sure to include the letter-number border of the print in order to identify where on the print the bullet number is located, i.e., C6.

A jpg image is a 'picture.
Your bullet images are drawing 'objects.'
The result of the two is an 'object' and cannot be treated as a 'picture.'
By rendering the 'object' into a 'picture', it can again be treated as a 'picture.'

You had a problem in the importing of the picture.
The image, 'picture', was on the screen, but ...
By placing 'objects' on the 'picture', the result becomes an 'object.'
The printed 'object' displays the corrupted 'picture.'
By creating a new 'picture' the error can be eliminated.
