How to become a TS 16949 Lead Auditor

This could be a dumb question (and I believe they do exist), but don't know where to start. Where would I begin to learn how to become lead auditor and possibly manage the QMS/BMS for our company?
(Company's Certifications TS16949 & ISO14001... ISO17025 probably in 2015)

My background: Currently in charge calibration lab in auto manufacturer and enjoy what I do, but there appears to be little room for advancement.
I am really passionate about process improvement and think I may enjoy being in charge of QMS more than calibration. I was an internal auditor for our initial 16949 certificate, but am not well versed with standard.

I plan to volunteer again with audits, and hopefully shadow our lead auditor, but don't know where else I could start self education. Also, I'm not sure I'd be a good fit for the high level (lead audit/mgr) standpoint, as I'm very detail oriented (anal about specific results) and don't know that I can observe well from high level standpoint. That is definitely something I'd have to work to acquire, if it's even possible for me. Not that I expect you to answer this for me too, but I'll take any valuable insight you can offer.

Sorry if this is confusing/redundant/dumb, or ill-placed thread, but everyone (mostly) is so helpful on this forum that I'd venture here first.

Thanks!

Read the information on this page.
There are quite a few requirements you must be aware of.
Read the second paragraph in the box.

I am sure that others will chime in....

Just a quick heads up that you need to be well versed (practiced) in the TS standard, the various automotive tools and customer specifics (LPAs etc). There is an extensive practical test...

Are you sure you mean a "lead auditor"? To become an RABQSA or similar "Lead Auditor" you need to undergo a lot of audits - not internally, either. You don't need this qualification unless you intend working for a Certification Body (I think they have to sponsor you, too).

You could attend a "Lead Auditor" course, but that's NOT the same as having the qualification of being a true "Lead auditor".

Andy is correct. :agree1:

:topic:

BTW, we badly need some new COMPETENT ISO/TS 16949 3rd Party auditors.
One of my Clients recently experienced an auditor who totally misinterpreted Customer Specific Requirements (CSRs). :frust: :frust:

There is a big opportunity for people who can qualify as a "proper" RABQSA/IATF Lead Auditor for TS 16949 - the number of auditors is getting fewer and fewer...

I suspect your intention is to become a lead internal auditor.

The link provided by Stijloor is for 3rd party (certification body) auditors only. They may not let you in the class unless you intend to become a certification body lead auditor and you have been referred by a certification body.

There is no universal definition for "internal lead auditor". It is defined by your organization. Whatever you can do to improve your knowledge would be most helpful. If you can somehow get into the class Stijloor linked, that would be great although many would consider it to be overkill for an internal auditor.

Thanks for all the response. To clarify, I DO NOT want to be a 3rd party (certification body) auditor. My intention is to become the lead auditor internally. Everywhere I have worked, this person is dedicated to managing the Quality System (internal audits, quality improvements, etc) and anything related to ISO certification.

Stijloor - I feel your customer's pain and have experienced the some incompetence during audits (my opinion). Problem was, our management didn't want to 'upset' the auditor and just let him 'do his thing'. Oh, the pain :/

Hi
my suggestion is to study the ISO TS standard, attend an external course for internal audit held by an organization recognized by IATF . Select the body in your own country.
Besides, you should acquire competences in quality tools such as FMEA< control plan , MSA, SPC as well and be aware of the contents of AIAG Blue books.
Vey important are also the knowledge of PPAP, APQP, that are used in the automotive market.
