How to Calibrate tools that are set up for each job

Ok,

So I have run into a bit of a "Sticky Wicket" in regards to how I calibrate tools like bore gages, chamfer gages and snap ring gages.

The issue at hand is if they are set up with NIST traceable joblox every time they are used then they are basically calibrated per every use.

How would I handle this procedurally or functionally. Thank you in advance.

The key is using a NIST traceable standard that is itself verified accurate.

How the calibration is recorded is less of a worry. Do you use job travelers or inspection sheets? If so, the per-use calibration can be recorded there. In this way the tools can be shown to be verified for use in verifying product goodness.

As an alternative, you can just have them marked with unique identifiers, keep a log sheet of the calibrations, then jot down the tools' identifying numbers/whatever on the job traveler or inspection sheet. This way, your calibration records don't disappear into a drawer of anonymous looking paperwork.

Does this seem okay?

Well yes we use Job Travelers and inspection tool check out sheets along with every tool that is in service has its own identification number. (we are a AS9100 Certified company) I suppose that does answer my question, I am in the middle of auditing our calibration records and double checking all calibration procedures and I want to be sure that we had all the necessary procedures for the tools we do in house.

Thank you for the input.

You're welcome - I would just add, since learning we're talking about aerospace, that I would put some kind of warning on these kinds of tools, calling for calibration per use. If you are going to put this down into a procedure, you might include putting in some safeguards like calibrate prior to use on each shift, or after approximately X times used (that would be hard to prove), etc. Calibration requirements usually include notifying when the next calibration is due.

Using a NIST tracable standard is perfect for setting zero on a gauge. In your case the indicator portion of the snap ring gauges, dial bore gauges and chamfer gauges should be checked for repeatability and hystersis for a thorough calibration. Wear on contact surfaces can also cause quality troubles.

The master rings "standard" should be verified at mininumn once a year if used on the shop floor.

These type of gauges allow zero to be set before each workpiece is checked or x amount of workpieces as mentioned. However if the gauge does not repeat or has a hystersis issue this can cause quality problems on your workpieces.

I'm not famailiar with the ISO certification you use, but do calibration of gauges daily.
