How to determine if a Standard is Auditable

Is this more reliable than having 'requirements' somewhere in the title of an auditable standard? I thought Reg was on the nail with requirements - I have only checked a few ISIO standards, but seemed to be a reliable 'rule' - I don't know if it is an ISO norm to put requirement in the title of an auditable standard?

gavinjordan,

How about:

Guidelines for...

and

Specification for...

I admit this is confused by the 9 o'clock news script saying something along the lines of "strictly enforced guidelines" when referring to the requirements (specification) for getting on an airplane.

Hi John

I don't think that quite does it. For example, the 18000 series. Yes, 18002 is referred to as guidelines, and 18001 as requirements, but it states in the forward "
OHSAS 18001 now refers to itself as a standard, not a
specification......."

Hmmm..

gavinjordan,

I admit that the OHSAS standard is out of the ordinary. For years BSi would not refer to it as a standard so it was called a scheme instead.

From scheme to standard to specification perhaps?

One way to tell is look at an accredited (IAF) Conformity Assessment Body's accreditation certificate. It lists the standards. Beware, however that some offer to certify you to a standard which isn't for that purpose (e.g. ISO26000) - but this isn't going to be accredited.

Actually, the IAF not only prohibited registrars to issue (non-accredited) certificates against ISO 26000, but it is going after anyone who issues a certificate against that document.

Technically, ISO 26000 is NOT a management system standard.
