How to document use of wrong engineering drawing

We have a job that engineering put the wrong print out on the floor and resulted in the part being non conforming. The part was made to print but now has to scrapped due to an error on the drawing. How do I document issues such as these? Is this an NCR or ECR? I wouldn't think NCR because of a drawing error. I know we need a correct print and now new material to replace the scrapped part. I will issue a CAR but what else?
An NCR is needed in order to record the disposition of those nonconforming parts. Doesn't matter what the cause is, or if you haven't come to a determination of what the cause is. An NCR controls the part, the CAR resolves the cause. A correct print and new material are considered containment actions only; they fix the immediate problem, but don't do anything in preventing it from happening again.

The root cause portion of the corrective action should lead you to understanding why it happened; this is critical, because if you cannot answer this question, there is no reason why it won't happen again.

Re: How to document use of wrong engineering drawing ?

Sometimes you have to be smarter than the print and say to yourself, do this look right? In this case the machinist wasn't.
Way back in College days, during a technical drafting class the instructor made a very important statement that has stuck with me all this time:

"A well drawn blue print is subject to only one interpretation, regardless of who looks at the drawing."

Sometimes you have to be smarter than the print and say to yourself, do this look right? In this case the machinist wasn't. There has been too many times, when engineering makes a mistake and result in rework. Engineering is disagreeing with me an out an NCR is not needed since the drawing was wrong and only needs an ECr and CAR. In this case when the part is scrapped, how do I document that and get new material to be machined?
lostmanager,

Was this a failure of quality planning or did the router show the correct drawing?

Or was it a failure to control the issue of drawings? In other words, it was too easy to select the wrong drawing?

Blaming the machinist for making a conforming part to the wrong drawing will not stop recurrence.

Yes you are correct. The operator only did what he was paid to do. Obviously the engineering department needs to verify all drawings before being out on the shop floor.

I am no way blaming the machinist. I am just trying to make sure an NCR is still needed along with aCAR to address the root cause.

I wish to take a fresh look on this. Can you explain to me sequentially, how the job gets routed starting from receipt from customer to floor. What are the processes involved till it reaches the floor.

It sounds like an aCAR would be called for, to determine the various root causes at play in this situation. I assume your system requires an NCR to disposition the bad parts that resulted, and if so, you should do an NCR too...

Hello, there seems to be a problem in engineering process. Somebody must have checked the drawing and another approved before releasing?

Because the parts are can not be repaired (total scrap), so to me this is clear NCR.

Not sure I understood the stand taken by your Engineering colleagues on agreeing for CAR but not for NCR. A CAR is always triggered by a non-conformity, is n't it. Having said that, perhaps NCRs are meant for some specific situation according to what is defined in your system. Getting into the details of your Corrective action procedure might help.

Hi, based on comments here I think it's clear your engineering department do not understand the role of the CAR and NCR. I agree both are needed as well as explaining them to engineering. We have a lot of drawings which are constantly being updated. To ensure that the correct ones are out on the floor, we archive superseded versions so they do not accidently get issued. You may need to look at your process from that perspective, because based on your comments, this is likely to reoccur.
